Conducted a survey because he wanted to know what college-bred Negro Americans knew about themselves that resulted from formal study in colleges and universities "I discovered that, in any given year, an institution would offer a course not only in AfroAmerican history and Afro-American literature, but also courses having to do with race relations, African history, and even, now and then, a course in Negro business." pg 26 Assumed white colleges wouldn’t have negro specific courses In the 60s, questions rose at predominantly white schools as to whether it was in the purview of higher education to have such courses Turmoil during 60s and 70s? Drive to introduce classes concerning the negro in white colleges Led to other demands Classes would show what african americans had done for the country throughout the years Did not demand inclusion of african american history into regular american history classes o Reason 1: they didn’t know enough about their own history to make specific demand of course modification o Reason 2: Period of deep distrust; they didn't believe professors could be trusted to change the curriculum they had taught for so long with so many assumptions Demand for Afro-American history tied black student mvmnt to civil rights mvmnt o Could make the civil rights arguments more valid if they were alse taught in college courses  The facts that supported the argument were barely grasped by those that attended black institutions that had such curriculum Congress of Racial Equality set up their own classes Ad hoc courses were also created Selma march historians were at the forefront The moves to engage personnel to teach the courses divided into 3 parts o Seek out someone known either through a colleague or through his/her writings o Find a black professor amenable to the conditions of the offer, which may range from adjunct, to visiting prof, to tenure o Resulting from the inability of a chair or search committee to recruit any acquaintance or a known black scholar or a teacher at a traditionally black institution, they would consider the pastor of a black church. Schools didn’t want white professors because they wanted to diversify and were more concerned with the politics...
