Description

Today, I would like to talk about John Major. First, I will talk about his political life and his appointment as a prime minister. Then I will talk about his European policy. 1. Biography John Major was born in 1943 in London. He is a statesman but also a British businessman who is a member of the conservative party. Before becoming Prime Minister after Margaret Thatcher, he was her Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is a senior official within the Government of the United Kingdom and head of her Majesty Treasury. He has been chosen to replace Margaret Thatcher on 28th November 1990. After his election, he was invested Prime Minister by Queen Elizabeth II who asked him to form a government. Of course, John Major accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed her hand. 2. His European policy One of the things that has marked the John Major’s mandate is the signing of the Maastricht Treaty in a Eurosceptic context inside the House of Commons and within his own conservative party. Although the Labor Party was in favor of ratifying the Maastricht Treaty, it was adopted with difficulty. Indeed, several conservative MPs called the Maastricht rebels voted against the treaty and the government. These MPs were against the principle of a federal Europe with the same currency and the same laws. The day after a first defeat, John Major called another vote which he declared as a vote of confidence. The vote of Confidence is a motion proposed to the parliament in order to give the members the opportunity to express their confidence in a government. If the government loses, it must resign, and new elections are organized. This is an unusual and risky procedure for the government. In this way John Major finally won the vote for the Maastricht Treaty on 23rd July 1993. This episode has weakened the authority of the Prime Minister who lost the elections in 1997 facing Tony Blair. John Major has retired from his political life and has refused his place within the House of Lords. Indeed, this place for life within the House of Lords is often given to former prime ministers. As a Conclusion, we can say that Euroscepticism isn’t a new phenomenon and has always divided the British Parliament, even within the conservative party whose leader today is Prime Minister Boris Johnson....
