Three parts of the news triangle: o Important info o Interesting info o Demographics 

Age, race, gender, family size, religion, job, income, political affiliation, income, sexual orientation, location, education level



The event: something that happens an issue comes from this



Every story has multiple elements the angle you choose comes from which element you emphasize o News elements: death and injury, proximity, police/crime, timeliness, prominence sex, progress, oddity, consequence, conflict, drama, usefulness/comparison, impact, weight, emotion



Source types: o Bluebook- professional, an expert on the topic o Face- a source with a personal connection to the story (makes it relatable to readers)



Credible sources are: accessible, reliable, accountable, and quotable



Dyad model: attitudes, beliefs, values, motivations o Try to get these from your sources. It add character to the story.

Writing the story 

When interviewing, tell them why you are writing it



Make sure to transcribe the interview



Inverted pyramid: most important info at the beginning, funnels down to less important details o Use single idea paragraphs. Each paragraph should modify the one above.



GRAMMAR IS IMPORTANT



Lede: starting sentence of the story; catches the reader’s attention o The lede doesn’t use names in it unless they are prominent individuals o Don’t start with a question o Don’t use full, direct quotes in the lede



Quotes o Go back and forth between indirect and direct quotes



Write the story in order of importance NOT chronologically...
