Jimenez Journal #1 Kristina Jimenez Diaz-Cooper English 101 PP 9/11/15 Journal Entry The essay by Bonnie Smith-Yackel entitled My Mother Never Worked raises many feeling for me, towards the issue of Social Security benefits. I was a single mom since the age of 19 and I began working for only $6.50 an hour. As small as my checks were, the taxes were still taken, and social security was still deducted from my earnings. The authors' mother was like many homemakers back in those days, they did so much hard labor to put food in their children's' mouths, but they struggled in different ways than a mother nowadays. Although she farmed for food, milked cows to drink, sewed clothes to reuse and didn’t have the convenience of a grocery store, she also probably bought her property for $2,000 or less which is what some properties go for monthly, just to rent. I am in no way putting down the hard work she has done, but for parents nowadays, we have an extremely high cost of living. They made their life on the farm work with all the resources they had, but at the same time her hard work only benefitted their family. I'm sure my check, however small, would have gone a lot further had I received all of my earnings, but instead I paid into my social security so that when the day came, when I needed it, it will be there. Of her 8 children, all of which graduated from what I assume is a public school, paid for by taxes, she enjoyed the benefits of a taxpayer. Although the work she has done for her family is harder work than most people will ever know; if everyone only worked to contribute to their family and not to society, there would not be things like schools, libraries, pension plans, retirement plans and many more programs that we as Americans all benefit from....
