An example of a commercial American Art Deco design that I chose is the Modern Diner in Rhode Island. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, there were diners created that were modeled after train cars. The Art Deco era came to the United States from the designers in France and Europe. Art Deco is inspired by Art Nouveau and modernism with the German Werkbund eras. Art Deco designers maintained traditional liberal beliefs in the alliance of art and manufacturing with the role of the decorative arts in elevating the taste and improving the quality of life through comfort, convenience, and possibilities of leisure activity (Raizman, 253). This diner shows the relationship the Art Deco period had with the Art Nouveau period. Since the diner is modeling after a train car it shows that it was inspired by industrial and manufacturing influences from the prior movements.
