Description

Pham 1 Judy Pham Professor Thrift ENGL 1301-5070 11 Nov. 2019 The Pros & Cons of Free Speech In the article, “The Right to Preach on a College Campus” by Ryan Joy, a balanced discussion is made by weighing both sides of the argument (whether random preachers that are unaffiliated with the campus has the right to potentially harass the students with their questions should get banned or if they can do whatever because of the first amendment) rather fairly. The key points described in the article is that codes of conduct at certain universities are unclear and not specific; they weren’t explained well to the said preacher like in the case of Mcglone v. University of Tennessee. Another key point that was explained by Joy was that campus regulations on the law of freedom of speech is very loose. In fact, if whatever a person is saying or doing regardless if they are affiliated with the campus or not and they are not disruptive to everyone else, not harming any students, and being noisy, then they can say anything (Joy 295). On the flip side, he also goes into explaining that a college campus needs to have solid rules to protect their students from potential danger. Of course, nobody can tell if a random preacher in the middle of campus grounds is dangerous, but it’d be good to take measures just in case, especially if unnecessarily rude encounters between the two said parties of people had happened before. In other words, his point was that college campuses should work hard to prevent those types of incidents as well as to also acknowledge the rights of harmless preachers who want their voices heard.
