Stanislavski and Judi Dench discussion post...

Description

How Judi Dench uses Stanislavski’s Theories such as Chapter 4 (Imagination), Chapter 8 Faith and Sense of Truth) and Chapter 9 (Emotion Memory) of acting in her performances. The renowned actress Judi Dench uses multiple acting theories that are seen in Stanislavski’s, ‘An Actor Prepares’ (1936), In her interview with Richard Eyre (Dench, 2015) she talks of her ‘Actors observation’ (04:25) and this ‘photograph album’ and how she looks into this album to better understand and thus she can portray a character in an imaginative but realistic way , Similarly Stanislavski in chapter 4 ‘Imagination’ (Stanislavski, 1936, p51-67) believes that ‘Real life is converted into theatrical reality by means of imagination’ (Merlin, 2018) although he also emphasizes in his chapter 8 ‘Faith and Sense of Truth’ (Stanislavski, 1936, p120- 153), to pay attention to fine detail when acting a scene to prevent falseness, Wells said about Judi ‘’ She looks for the humanizing touches, the person below the style‘’(Wells, 2011) Additionally, Dench allows a character to go through the ‘Sieve of herself’ (36:30) before she plays it, she allows her experiences and emotion to create a realistic but imaginative character portrayal..Furthermore, Judi talks of her agony of acting in film as she can only get to act a scene once where as in theatre she can over many nights get to act a scene in many different ways in front of audience (08:30), Arguably this is reflected in ‘Imagination’ when Stanislavski says that an actor must have an ‘’…unbroken series of supposed circumstances’’ when acting out a scene.
