Populism used to correct democracy? When the government has failed, used to oppose. Correction when their voice has not been heard, therefore, their democratic rights compromised Brexit, Trump etc, came about from mass dissatisfaction from the electorate. The people were given the opportunity to vote, therefore, gave an answer. However, many people weren’t even interested in Europe until the subject/referendum was posed to them. Anti-establishment? Ant-elite? Deference in decline? Social media environment – choose the sources that you are comfortable with, reaffirmation. Don’t have to read sources you do not agree with etc. Every opinion is now valid due to social media platforms. Not all facts. Easier to find people with are like-minded to you, without advertising your political views in front of everyone. Conspiracy theory – distrust of the elite? Is democracy itself flawed? What do we want from democracy? To be the will of the people?
