Notes on Reading A -

The article examines whether the UK’s commitment to European defence and security will diminish, whether Brexit will result in further integration of the EU and whether the EU will afford the UK a strong role in its security and defence policy.

Examines the relationship with the common security and defence policy post Brexit. Relationship with NATO post Brexit for Euro-British relations. Understanding UK’s role in EU security is crucial in Britain’s withdrawal EU security is most likely to become more integrated and harmonized with the UK leaving the EU. Britain’s security relationship will most likely exist through NATO and the ‘french connection’ Britain represents the failure of differentiation in the EU, so will the EU head towards more a more harmonized approach Britain represents one quarter of the EU’s military capabilities ‘Global Britain’ – special relationship with the US, relationship with China, renewal of Commonwealth ties. However, US want Britain to remain in EU (pathway) and as do commonwealth countries, Britain’s military capabilities has declined Britain’s commitment to the common security and defence policy highlights lack of commitment to regional security cooperation. Favours NATO and the bilateral relationship with France over the EU institution Populist surge – Trump’s presidential election 2016, elections in France, Germany and the Netherlands. UK’s decision to leave the EU as “wake -up call” for EU to stop further integration

Integration versus disintegration, and harmonisation ver- sus differentiation, but these dynamics have not been examined in the context of foreign, security, and defence policy. Argued that that differenation will diminish and further integration will take place once Britain leave the EU.
