Description

HW #3 KINES 250 Stressors, whether real or imaginary, trigger a chain reaction in the body that involves activation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and secretion of stress hormones. The body’s systems are being prepared for a physical outlet: either to fight something or to run away from it. The body’s desire is to regain homeostasis. However, if the stress is prolonged, the cumulative effects can be harmful and affect the person’s physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being. 1. Stress can generate multiple chain reactions. The body is prepared to either face a threat head-on or run away from it. This primal survival skill is called the fight-orflight response. Once the brain perceives something to be a stressor , the nervous system signals the release of stress hormones like adrenaline from the adrenal glands. During the alarm phase, some systems are more alert in order to prepare the body for action. For example, hearing sharpens, heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, and clotting ability increases. At the same time, the digestive and immune systems slow as blood is diverted to more critical areas. Prolonged stress can diminish the quality of your life. Stress can have physical manifestations like tension headaches, indigestion, and hair loss. Stress can also have psychological effects like depression and anxiety.

An effect of this is attending group tutoring sessions offered on campus, studying in the library, and going to office hours. From this, I see many students who are similar to me, with high academic goals, but what comes with it is high amounts of stress, being shown through frustration and even some turning to alcohol and drugs to alleviate the high amounts of stress from academics.

4. College is something that we can experience in life until we go out into the "real world." It is where we are setting ourselves up for future careers, relationships, and knowledge.

Academics is a major developing factor for college students, and of course some may disagree because there are plenty of other causes of stress, but academics is what is preparing us for the "real world."...
