PHYSICS

1 Introductory Physics 1300/1400/1310/1410, Lab 1. September, 2020

LAB 1 OBJECTIVES  Download, read, and understand the document, “Syllabus and Description of the Physics Labs Fall 2020 (Online Introductory Physics Lab)”  Download, read, and understand the document, “An Introduction to the iOLab Fall 2020 (Online Introductory Physics Lab)”  Download and modify the document, “LAB 1 – Lab Report Template”  Record and report your lab GA or TA’s name and email address  Demonstrate you have access to a working version of Microsoft Excel (to be used in future weeks) and that you can include tables in your report  Create an iOLab Repository account, demonstrate you have internet access to this account, and that you can include screen captures in your report  Demonstrate your ability to prepare a PDF lab report  Demonstrate your ability to submit a lab report as a Blackboard assignment

2 Introductory Physics 1300/1400/1310/1410, Lab 1. September, 2020

NOTE ON USING THE LAB MANUALS These lab manuals have been constructed with embedded YouTube videos to better show you how the data was acquired and how certain aspects of data collection or analysis are performed. You should definitely watch these before attempting the analysis or asking your GA/TA for assistance. Embedded YouTube videos are generally shown as images with a magenta/pink box around them and a magenta/pink “YouTube” tag next to that. Clicking on this link in our lab manual should take you to the appropriate video if your device is connected to the internet.

3 Introductory Physics 1300/1400/1310/1410, Lab 1. September, 2020

LAB 1: INTRODUCTION Exercise 1 Download, read, and understand the document, “Syllabus and Description of the Physics Labs Fall 2020 (Online Introductory Physics Lab)”. You are not graded on this exercise and you don’t need to report on this.

Exercise 2 Download, read, and understand the document, “An Introduction to the iOLab Fall 2020 (Online Introductory Physics Lab)”. You are not graded on this exercise and you don’t need to report on this, but you do need the information in the document to perform this lab.

Exercise 3 Download and modify the document, “LAB 1 – Lab Report Template”. Use this as the basis of your lab report and complete all the required information at the top. You will have to write your own introduction, conclusion, etc.

Exercise 4 Record and report your lab GA or TA’s name and email address. This must be reported.

4 Introductory Physics 1300/1400/1310/1410, Lab 1. September, 2020

Exercise 5 We will be using Microsoft Excel extensively in both semesters of introductory physics lab and knowing how to use Excel is one of the most important fundamental skills that any scientist in any discipline needs to possess. Note that this HAS to be Microsoft Excel, not just any random spreadsheet program (like Google Sheets) because we will be using the graphing and line fitting functions of Excel that those programs do not possess. To demonstrate that you: o Have Excel o Can enter data into it o Can import tables into your lab report you will create a table with your student ID entered, one number per row, in Excel. You will then copy and paste that table into your report. For example, if your student ID number is 106821544, you will create a Microsoft Excel Sheet that looks like the image shown at the right.

When you have created that spreadsheet table, you will report it by including a screen capture showing that you have Excel. This can be done using any screen snip it tool, or by hitting PrtScn or better, Alt+PrtScn while viewing your table and then pasting it into the lab report template.

After you have pasted a screenshot into the report, you should also paste just the table into the report (this is different). Using your mouse, click and drag to highlight the numbers of your student ID. This is shown at right. With the numbers in just those rows highlighted, “copy” the data by right-clicking or using the pulldown menus.

In the your report, you can “paste” that data by clicking where you want it to go. If you hit “paste” it inputs it as a table. You can edit Excel tables in Word, so this is a modifiable table. If you paste a table into Word, it may looks like this. 1 0 6 8 2 1 5 4 4

If you hit “paste as picture” you can input the table as a picture image, which is sometime easier to handle. If you go to Paste Options, or “Paste Special” you will see the “paste as picture” icon.

Either paste option is completely acceptable.

6 Introductory Physics 1300/1400/1310/1410, Lab 1. September, 2020

If you do not have a working version of Excel, follow the instructions here: https:// www.uwindsor.ca/bookstore/61/computers

If you paste a table into Word a picture, it may looks like this.

Microsoft Office 365 for students is available using your active UWinID account.

1 0 6 8 2 1 5 4 4

Exercise 6 Throughout the semester, we will be distributing iOLab data through the iOLab Repository. To perform the analysis you must create an iOLab Repository account and demonstrate you have internet access to this account. Following the instructions clearly detailed in the document, “An Introduction to the iOLab Fall 2020 (Online Introductory Physics Lab)” which you acquired in Exercise 2, create an iOLab repository account using your UWindsor email account. When that account is created, access it using a web brower https://iolabrepository.azurewebsites.net/ When you access it, there will be no datasets under the “My datasets” tab and the “Shared datasets” tab. In future weeks, when data is shared with you to analyze, it will appear under the “Shared datasets” tab. You will submit a screen capture of your iOLab Repository Home page to demonstrate you now have it and your login identity MUST BE CLEARLY VISIBLE AND LEGIBLE! This is very important, as your GA/TA needs to read this login identity to enter it into the repository so that you can receive shared datasets. If

this is not visible, you will not only lose marks, but you will not be able to receive any data in the following weeks which will earn you a zero in those weeks.

This is a screen capture of an iOLab Repository homepage. The login identity here must be visible and readable.

If you feel like the resolution is not good enough to read your login identity, include a second picture that is zoomed in on it! That would be easy!

Lastly, you MUST type out (in full) your uwin email address that you used to create this repository account. This is very important, as this is the address that will be used to share data files with you.

Exercise 7 When you have  completed all these exercises,  included the required information about you and your GA/TA  written a short introduction and conclusion your lab report is complete. 8 Introductory Physics 1300/1400/1310/1410, Lab 1. September, 2020

Prior to submission of your lab report you must convert it to a PDF document. Microsoft Word easily creates PDF’s by hitting, File/Export/ “Create PDF/XPS” or by “save as” a .PDF file type.

Exercise 8 Upload your completed lab report to Blackboard for your GA/TA to grade. Full instructions for how to do this are included in the document, “Syllabus and Description of the Physics Labs Fall 2020 (Online Introductory Physics Lab)” which you acquired in Exercise 1.
