Laboratory Activity 12: Responding to Drug Queries Using Systematic Approach General Instructions: Each student shall be given 5 cases from the list below. For each case, the form must be filled out following the systematic approach in answering drug information queries.

Cases: • D.R., female, 15 yo patient has recently been started on atomoxetine for treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. She is taking no other medications. She has noted recently that his hair is thinning and wants to know if this might be drug related. • Nanay Emma as this patient findly called. 79 yo, has mixed all her medications together in a pill box and needs a capsule to be identified. The capsule is purple and gray and has the imprint code 224 3850. • Prof. PPP, 26 yo, pharmacist and faculty member at UP College of Pharmacy, wants to know what current investigational drugs are being used to treat Huntington's disease. • M.Y. San, a female patient visiting the United States from Sweden contacts the pharmacist asking for advice. She has had problems with acid reflux and took Artonil® at home, which releived her symptoms well, and would like to know what would be an euivalen medication available in the United States. • A male pharmacist received a prescription dexamethasone to help reduce a tumor. The pharmacist wants to know what dose is appropriate for this use. • A customer approaches you and hands you a piece of paper. On the paper is written“Kaopectate for dog diarrhea.” The customer states that the veterinarian instructed her to get some Kaopectate® over-the-counter for her dog that has loose stools. What resources would be helpful in determining if this is an acceptable therapy and a proper dose? • A pharmacy student is working on a presentation about skin whitening cosmetic agents, specifically glutathione. He knows that there is now a craze in the Philippine market regarding this new beauty agent. He is curious on how this substance can bring about skin whitening when in fact it has been marketing as a food supplement. • A 45 yo male patient is receiving amiodarone in a bag of normal saline. The nurse wants to know is the amiodarone therapy is compatible with metronidazole. • A customer contacts you in your pharmacy requesting information about drug screening tests. She has a drug screen scheduled three days from today as she needs to renew her driver's license. Last night she used cocaine and she wants to know if the cocaine will be out of her system before the drug screen test. • A new mother, S.T., 26 yo, has been breast feeding her child for three months. The mother has recently been prescribed levofloxacin for treatment on an infection. Is it safe for her to continue breastfeeding during this therapy?
