Description

COVALENT - IONIC LAB REPORT / RESEARCH PART 1 Watch the video below, and answer the questions that follow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGXvCyPkTS8 YOU WILL NEED TO USE THE INTERNET, to help answer the questions. 1) a) b) c) d)

What are the four properties we will be viewing? Appearance & state of matter Solubility in water Electrical conductivity Melting time

2) What is the name for KI, and what is 1 use of KI? Potassium iodide can be used as medication. It loosens and breaks up mucus in the airways. 3) What is the name of KCl, and what is 1 use of KCl? Potassium chloride can be used as medicine. It prevents or treats low blood levels of potassium. 4) What is 1 use of Glucose C6H12O6? One use of glucose is used to provide carbohydrate calories to a person who cannot eat if the person has a medical condition or illness. 5) What is KNO3 and 1 use of KNO3? Potassium Nitrate is used to make gun powder. 6) What is 1 use of Paradichlorobenzene, C6H4Cl2 (PDCB)? One use of Paradichlorobenzene is used in mothballs to protect clothing from moths. 7) What is 1 use of Benzoic Acid C6H5COOH? One use of Benzoic Acid is used to make perfume and dyes.

8) What is 1 use of Acetic Acid CH3COOH? One use of Acetic Acid is a natural all-purpose cleaning agent. Since the acid is clear white vinegar it is can be used on surfaces that can tolerate a strong, acidic product. 9) What is 1 use of Paraffin Wax C24H50? Paraffin Wax issued in spas and can also be used to provide pain relief to sore joints and muscles. 10) What is 1 use of Hydrogen Chloride HCl? What is another name for HCl? Another name for HCI is Hydrochloric acid and it can be used for cleaning. 11) Define Solubility. Solubility is the ability to be dissolved especially in water or liquid. 12) What is the difference between soluble and insoluble? The difference between soluble and insoluble is that when something is soluble it is able to dissolve while when something is insoluble it is not able to dissolve. 13) What is Distilled Water? How is it made? Distilled water is water that has been boiled into vapor and condensed back into a liquid form. Distilled water is made when water is heated to the point it turns to vapor and then the vapor condenses back into a liquid and leaves back the mineral residue. So the water is distilled. 14)

15) Go back to the 3:55 mark in the video. Did the teacher add the water to the Acetic Acid, or the Acetic Acid to the water? The teacher added the Acetic Acid to the water. 16) Why do you think he did it that way and not vice versa? To show if the Acetic Acid is soluble in water. If he did it the other way he is trying to show if water is soluble in Acetic Acid. 17) What happens to the electrical conductivity tester, when the ‘leads’ are taken out, but the tester is plugged in? When the leads are taken out and the tester is plugged in the light bulb does not light up. 18) What does the teacher say, is the reason (for # 17)? The teacher says the circuit isn’t complete between the two leads. In order for the light bulb to light up, the leads have to be connected somehow by something that can conduct electricity. 19) Which substances are being used, for this experiment? Substances that are being used for this experiment are pure distilled water, KI, KCL, Glucose, KNO3, PDCB, Benzoic Acid, Paraffin, Acetic Acid and HCL

21) When the teacher is conducting the experiment above, what does he say to do, after testing EACH compound? After testing each compound the teacher says to “clean the electrodes”. 22) Write a SUMMARY of at least 6+ sentences on what you learned, what you liked, what you disliked. I learned and realized that most of the products that were soluble with water were conducting with the light bulb. I also learned that about solubility and insolubility. I learned that most of these chemicals that were tested we use every day for cleaning or perfume. There should be some form of connection in order for electricity to conduct. Even though Acetic Acid is soluble in water it does not have a strong connection like the other chemicals that are soluble in water. I liked the experiment with the light bulb

because it is very interesting. I did not dislike anything from the experiment....
