Lab report for Ph 112...
Lab #1: Exploring Objects in the Universe: Purpose: To measure the altitudes of the stars posted around the lab room. To measure the angular diameter of the sun from a photograph on the computer.
Method: To measure the altitude of the stars, a quadrant was used. To properly use the quadrant I aligned the two nails on it to the stars in the lab room. When it aligned, I read the altitude based on where the string met the scale. To measure the angular diameter of the sun on the computer we established a calibration bar/scale, and ruler and determined the angular size of the sun.
Final Results: The altitudes measured by students in my group did not result in the same numbers. Each one of us received different heights. It was also dependent on the sighting location. Many of us sat in our seats while measuring as we were instructed to do by our professor. The results of the angular diameter of the sun were all the same because many of us worked together and received the same answers because we saw the same distance on the photograph....
