In this laboratory activity students will be exposed to the types of aggregate in order to determine the unit weight (bulk density) and voids aggregates. The group is required to carry out bulk density test following the procedures outline and subsequently analyze the data and present it in a proper technical format

Objective To determine the unit weight (bulk density) and voids aggregates.

Apparatus 1. weighing balance 2. weight box(metric) 3. sample splitter 4. cylinder containers (3,7,15 or 30 liters capacity) 5. shovel 6. tamping rod (16mm diameter and 60 cm long rounded at one end) 7. piece of glass plate

Procedure

Compact weight determination 1. The volume of container was determined to be used by accurately filling it with water at 16.7 Celsius and weigh the amount of water. The weight of water in kg will give the volume of container in filters. 2. Take the sample by quartering. 3. Filled the container with aggregates in three layers with each layer being tamped with 25 strokes of rounded end of the tamping rod, distributing the strokes evenly over the surface. The container is finally filled to overflowing. 4. Strik off the surplus aggregates using tamping rod as straight edge. 5. Weighted the container full of aggregates. 6. The net weight of aggregate was calculated in the container and compute the unit weight of aggregate in kg/litre by dividing the net weight of aggregate in the container by the volume of the container Loose weight determination 1. Filled the container to overflowing by means of a shovel. The aggregate being discharged from a height not exceeding 5 cm above the top of container. 2. Level off the surface of the aggregate using tamping rod as a straight edge. 3. The net weight of aggregate was determined in the container. 4. Computed the percentage of voids density in kg/litre

Result and analysis Based on the experiment, to find volume of water we used

v=

m ρ

and we get the value 5.219

Liter. weight of container + full of aggregate – weight of empty container is used to find the weight of aggregates and we obtained as 7.318 kg for compacted aggregate and for loose aggregates is 6.688 kg. the formula to find bulk density is

weight of aggregate . The bulk volume of container

density of aggregates for compact weight is 1.402 kg/L while for loose weight is 1.282 kg/L.

the percentage of voids for compacted is 47.49 % while for loose is 51.99% and we obtained it specific gravity−bulk density x 100 . specific gravity

using formula

Conclusion In conclusion, the bulk density of aggregates for compact weight is 1.402 kg/L while for loose weight is 1.282 kg/L. The percentage of voids for compacted aggregate is 47.49% and for loose aggregate is 51.99% References -
