Exercise # 3.2 Testing Food for Biomolecules

Introduc)on Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to accurately test the starch, lipid, sugar, & protein component levels in each food & drink testing variable.

Hypothesis I suspect that once the food & drink test variables come in contact with the reagents, the results will prove that the food & drink test variables provide positive tests with more than one biomolecule.

Materials & Methods Materials -

Test tube holder & 6 glass test tubes Hot Plate Pipette Biuret Solution Iodine Solution Benedicts Solution Sudan IV Solution Apple Juice Sprite & Diet Sprite Milk Salad Dressing Lima Bean Extract

Test Method Test methods used in this experiment will be, testing for biomolecules one at a time. Test all variables for starch, then test them all for sugar, then test them all for lipids, & then test them all for proteins.

Procedure / steps 1. Gather & set up materials for experiment. 2. Add one pipette of each substance into each test tube. 3. Label each test tube with the substance name correctly. 4. Add desired (3-5) reagents droplets into each test tube. 5. Gently shake each test tube from side to side & replace back in holder. 6. (When testing for sugars) Place all test tubes in boiling water bath for (3-5) minutes. 7. Wait a couple seconds to examine any color or texture changes. 8. Record observations in tables & graphs. 9. Dispose of each substance moisture properly & clean each test tube. 10. Repeat procedures for each reagents.

Results Observa)ons During the experiment many color changes were displayed while testing for biomolecules. When observing the color changes after adding the reagents many test variables change colors & expressed positive test results. My test resulted these statements to be true. (Photos are shown below for evidence) - Apple juice, Sprite, & Milk to be positive for Sugar. - Diet Sprite to result positive for zero biomolecules. - Milk & Salad dressing to be positive for Lipids/oils. - Milk & Lima Bean Extract to be positive for Protein.

Discussion Conclusion(s) My hypothesis was correct not only one, but three testing variables tested motive for more than one biomolecule. Two tested positive for two biomolecules & one tested positive for three biomolecules. During this experiment I learned that Diet Sprite had zero biomolecules in it, which I was not expecting. I was assuming it would have sugar in it & that the soda company lied about zero sugar.

Errors / Sugges)ons Suggestions would be that some of the food & drink variables require more reagent drops to show any change, so be patient.
