Semester/Year: ___Fall_____ /___2020_____ Course: General Biology III Lab

Although you will not be attending classes this semester in the University’s laboratories, you will be dissecting animals and must comply with the following safety rules and procedures. The process of dissecting preserved animals requires using sharp dissection tools which can injury you. Also some of the animals are fixed in formalin which has health risks. To learn more information about the health risks of the chemicals used to fix and preserve the dissection animals, click on the following link: https://www.carolina.com/knowledge/life-science/faqs-about-dissection-safety During dissections you must: 1. Wear safety goggles or glasses with OSHA side shields. 2. Work in an area that is well lit and ventilated. 3. Wear disposable gloves (latex, nitrile, or vinyl). Avoid latex gloves if you have a latex allergy. Gloves should fit well and not constrict movement, nor gap at the ends of the fingers or around the wrist. 4. DO NOT USE SCALPELS!! A scalpel will come as part of your dissection package; however, scalpels are extremely sharp and excessive for the type of dissections you will be performing. You will be using scissors, forceps, and a dissection probe. 5. During your Zoom dissections, notify the instructor immediately of accidents or if you are injured. 6. Wear attire appropriate for laboratory work. For example: A. Wear shoes with closed toes. No flip-flops or sandals will be permitted while dissecting. B. Wear enough clothing (lab coat, long sleeves shirt, or jacket) to protect your skin. C. Avoid wearing long, dangling jewelry. D. Long hair must be tied back, or covered, with something sufficient so that hair does not become exposed to dissection animals or preservative chemicals. 7. Never put anything into your mouth while dissecting!! This includes food, gum, candy, drinks, fingernails, pens, etc. No food or drink containers should be around the dissection area. 8. Have a first aid kit nearby. It should at least contain a box of bandages (Band-Aids) and triple antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) or alcohol/peroxide. In the event of an emergency or you are badly injured, call 911. 9. Never attempt any unauthorized experiments.

After Dissections: 10. Dispose of dissected animals and gloves in a covered trash can. 11. Dispose of preservative chemicals by: rinsing a small volume of the chemical down the drain with large quantities of running water. 12. Clean the dissection area thoroughly with soap and water and disinfectant. 13. Thoroughly wash your hands with antibacterial soap.

By signing below, I acknowledge that I have read the Safety Rules and Procedures and agree to comply with the requirements as discussed. Further, I understand that if I fail to comply with the Safety Rules and Procedures, I will receive a zero for my dissection grade and my laboratory privileges may be suspended. I may also be referred to University’s Student Conduct office for imposition of appropriate discipline. Student (print name) ANH NGUYEN
