Description

Who is Larry Alcala -

Lauro "Larry" Zarate Alcala (August 18, 1926 – June 24, 2002) was a well-known editorial cartoonist and illustrator in the Philippines. In 2018, he was posthumously conferred the National Artist for Visual Arts title and the Grand Collar of the Order of National Artists (Order ng Pambansang Alagad ng Sining).

What are their experiences on how they started as an artist? -

Alcala started his career while studying at the University of the Philippines (UP) in 1946. He graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at the UP in 1950 and became a professor at the same university from 1951 to 1981. His first comic strip was a parody of superman entitled "Siopaoman" in the Filipino comic book Halakhak. Larry Alcala was one of the first men to use Taglish as a medium of communication with his "Kalabog en Bosyo" in 1947. He, too, pioneered animated cartoons and TV commercials in the country. He was given the title "Dean of Filipino Cartoonists" in 1997, an achievement award for his lifetime dedication to the art of capturing humor in the character and everyday life of Filpinos. Also, Alcala's most famous cartoon series was the "Slice of Life", which is a reflection of the many unique aspects of everyday life in the Philippines. He captured the interest of his weekend patrons by giving them the task of looking for his image cleverly concealed within the weekend cartoon.

What is their inspiration/s? -

Alcala's inspiration came from ordinary people he met every day, his son said, and as entertainment, the artist would draw his friends and neighbors as characters in funny situations. These homemade comic books were enjoyed around their neighborhood.

What is the reason why they pursue creating art? -

because of his comprehensive understanding of the role of cartoons in education and values formation, “spiced up the slices of Filipino lives” through his cleverly humorous illustrations.

Reflection of the Group

3. You can show your appreciation to them by sharing their art in social media. Tell about the artist and where it came from. Follow and support the artist. As a community, it is important to support local artists because, without local citizen support, the art they make would cease to make the impact it could make. When you support the local artist community, you are supporting all of our respective creative freedom. Local artists add more than just pretty pictures to your community so it's important to continue supporting them. Many artists have a true passion for making their own communities a better place to live through their artwork. Not supporting their efforts can hurt their attempts to make things better for your own life. If you've never considered doing more to support artists around you now is the time to learn about what you can do personally. You can find ways to support artists that work for you, but doing more for your local art community in any manner is always a step forward. No one ever regrets being more supportive of artists. Its always a great thing for you and for the artists you support....
