Description

Doctrine and Covenants 134:4 “4 We believe that religion is instituted of God; and that men are amenable to him, and to him only, for the exercise of it, unless their religious opinions prompt them to infringe upon the rights and liberties of others; but we do not believe that human law has a right to interfere in prescribing rules of worship to bind the consciences of men, nor dictate forms for public or private devotion; that the civil magistrate should restrain crime, but never control conscience; should punish guilt, but never suppress the freedom of the soul.” - The balance between government and religion can often be a big issue in some people's lives. It is good to go through scriptures such as this one to realize and have guidance on certain areas of this issue. One part that I really like from this specific scripture is how it says that we should follow our religious prompting as long as it does not cause us to infringe on others liberties. I think that is something that a lot of people need to remember while we are going through such a hard time in our country right now. http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/official-statement/religious-freedom“Religion has a vital place in society. To exert its positive influence, religious organizations and people need physical, social and legal space to practice their religion. All lawful voices should be heard in the p  ublic square. Neither religious nor secular voices should be silenced. Religion is not just private worship; it involves public expression on social and moral issues.” - I am guilty of this. A lot of the time I convince myself that I do not need to share my beliefs for one reason or another. It is a good reminder that we should always be standing up for the things that we believe in. http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/religious-values-in-the-public-square“Striving to communicate and promote their values in ways that resonate with people in their communities, Latter-day Saints add their voices to the multitude of others concerned with the prosperity of society and the rightful place of religion in the public square. President of the Church Thomas S. Monson captures this aspiration: “As a church we reach out not only to our own people but also to those people of good will throughout the world in that spirit of brotherhood which comes from the Lord Jesus Christ.’” - Going to BYUI, I have been asked more times than I can count the question “How would the world benefit from the standards that we have in the Church?” It is usually the same answer; the world would be a better place. But if we are never trying to implement these standard into the world, then we will never be able to reach that end goal. The question that I had for this week: What way can everyday people try to make a change in the world through government?...
