Laboratory Tests
Use nonlatex gloves and supplies when coming into contact with patients. If using latex gloves, try and use nonpowder latex as that reduces the exposure to latex. Use appropriate contact precautions. Do not use oil based creams or lotions due to the risk of glove deterioration After removing gloves, wash hands thoroughly Educate yourself and your patient on prevention of a latex allergy Learn signs and symptoms of a latex allergy
Reactions can range from skin irritation such as redness, rash, hives or itching to respiratory symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, throat irritation and dyspnea. Shock can also occur during a latex allergy reaction
Members of the healthcare team that frequently use latex gloves are at risk of developing a latex allergy
Diagnostic Procedures During a skin test, a small sample of latex will be placed under the skin surface via needle on the forearm or back. If an allergy exists, a raised bump will develop
