IdesperatelywantedtofitinwiththeWhitecultureIsawallaroundme;Ireallythought thiswaswhat“normal”lifelookedlike.Anditdidn'thelpthatapopularcartoonTV showatthetimefeaturedastereotypicalIndiancharacterasarunningpunchline,which ripenedschoolbulliestopushmearoundatrecess.Imean,Iwouldwatchtheshowand thinktomyself,“Man,I'mgoingtogotoschoolandgetittomorrow.”Asakidfroma Brownfamily,Iexperiencedeverythingfromwantingtochangemyname,theclothesmy motherwore,andeventhefoodthatwasonthekitchentableeverynight.Thosethoughts wereverymuchapartofmylifefromthegetgo;thatwastheexperienceofbeinga BrownkidinWhitesuburbanAmerica.
