1 1.1

About Biometry An Introduction to this Unit

Biometry introduces students to various statistical techniques commonly required when engaging in the scientific method. Presentation of the content will emphasise the correct principles and procedures for collecting and analysing scientific data, using a data-driven approach. Topics include effective methods of gathering data, statistical principles of designing experiments, error analysis, describing different sets of data, probability, statistical estimation and inference, simple linear regression and correlation and analysis of categorical data.

What is Expected of You

Study Load A student is expected to study an hour per credit point a week. For example a 10 credit point unit would require 10 hours of study per week. This time includes the time spent within classes during lectures, tutorials or practicals. Attendance It is strongly recommended that students attend all scheduled learning activities to support their learning. Online Learning Requirements Unit materials will be made available on the unit’s vUWS (E-Learning) site (https://vuws.westernsydney.edu.au/). You are expected to consult vUWS at least twice a week, as all unit announcements will be made via vUWS. Teaching and learning materials will be regularly updated and posted online by the teaching team. vUWS site, Online learning activities The external offering makes use of the discussion board facility, Online resources/tools Special Requirements Essential Equipment: Scientific calculator and access to a computer with appropriate software. Changes to Unit as a Result of Past Student Feedback

Student feedback plays a vital role in improving the quality and educational effectiveness of Western Sydney University units and in ensuring academic staff keep in touch with student needs. You are welcome to provide feedback that is related to the teaching of this unit. At the end of the semester you will be given the opportunity to complete a Student Feedback on Unit (SFU) questionnaire to assess the unit. If requested by your unit coordinator, you may also have the opportunity to complete a Student Feedback on Teaching (SFT) questionnaire to provide feedback for individual teaching staff. As a result of student feedback, the following changes and improvements have recently been made: – Some practical questions in Worksheets have been revised. Also a couple of data sets used in the unit have been updated with new data drawn from experiments done in students’ other units.

2.2

Approach to Learning

Biometry introduces students to various statistical techniques commonly required when engaging in the scientific method. Using the resource material provided in Worksheets and software demonstration videos, students will perform statistical analyses and interpret results using the software called R-commander. Students are provided practical data sets which some have been collected through experiments done in their other units. R-commander has been installed correctly and runs effectively in all WSU IT lab computers. Instructions on how to use R-commander in the WSU IT lab computers are provided on Biometry vUWS site. Students are very strongly advised to use the WSU IT lab computers when using R-commander. Please note that R-commander is NOT installed in Library computers nor in SCEM labs. Basic instructions have also been provided on how to download and install R-commander in home computers. However home use of this software is completely optional. Students are strongly advised to contact the unit coordinator if they have software issues and such issues need to be addressed well before online quizzes start. In Autumn 2018, this unit is offered as a Composite delivery (i.e. External delivery). Unit learning material will be available online via vUWS site. There will not be any face to face weekly lectures and practicals except the two optional workshops held at Hawkesbury campus. First workshop will be held during the mid-session break and the second is scheduled during StuVac. Biometry is a 10 credit point unit and will require your full and continuous attention to maintain the highest possible grades. It is expected that you will spend at least 10 hours per week for 14 weeks on this unit. For example, 2hours for lectures , 2 hours for practicals and a further 6 hours per week could be spent on R-commander demonstration videos/online lectures and textbook readings/questions. Hence you are strongly encouraged to adhere to the schedule of Teaching and Learning Activities which can be found in the Learning Guide. This schedule sets out clearly what you should be doing each week. Please keep up-to-date with the content as set out in this schedule so that your attendance at workshops will be worthwhile and also give you the best possible chance of successfully completing 200263 Biometry over Autumn 2018. Assessment Summary

The assessment items in this unit are designed to enable you to demonstrate that you have achieved the unit learning outcomes. Completion and submission of all assessment items which have been designated as mandatory or compulsory is essential to receive a passing grade. To pass this unit you must: -Attempt the Computer Skills Assignment; -Achieve a minimum of 40% in the final examination (or deferred exam if eligible); -Achieve a combined overall mark (i.e. combining all assessment tasks) of at least 50%. Instructions: Computer Skills Assignment is compulsory. Students who do not attempt this in Week10 (unless an application for special consideration is successful) will be awarded an FNS ( Fail Non Submission) grade for the unit. If you miss the Computer Skills Assignment, you must submit an application for Special Consideration with supporting documents via eForms. A successful application will mean that the weighting for this missed Computer Skills Assignment will be added to your final exam weighting. This is an individual assessment that requires the use of R-commander and vUWS. A scientific calculator may be useful too. When attempting this assignment, students are very strongly advised to use a computer in WSU IT labs on any campus where R-commander has been installed correctly and runs effectively. Please note that R-commander is NOT installed in Library computers nor in SCEM labs. Instructions on how to use R-commander in the WSU IT labs have been provided on Biometry vUWS site. Off campus computer/internet/software issues experienced while attempting this assignment will not be accepted as excuses and no special consideration will be granted. Once you commence assignment you are strongly advised to refrain from visiting other websites or even other pages/sections on the vUWS site as you may run the risk of exiting from the test page and hence will not be able to resume assignment. A selection of topics from R-commander work discussed in Worksheets 1-7 will be examined. It will consist of a number of questions relating to the selected topics. Students will be required to use R-commander in order to answer these questions and their answers must be entered into the solutions page on vUWS. Make sure the answer to each question is entered into the correct solution box. Remember to save and submit when you are finished. Once started you will have 75 minutes to complete the assignment. You cannot leave and return to the assignment. You will get only ONE attempt at this assessment. Resources: Lecture notes, Worksheets and R-commander demonstration videos provided on vUWS are helpful.
