Images don’t just reflect reality – they are performative (they bring particular realities into being). Every representation constructs a particular ‘truth’ about a place or situation – some factors are highlighted and others hidden. All knowledge is ‘situated’. It is experienced from a particular place. Consequently there can be many different truths or representations of the same situation. Emotional geographies – focus on how our emotions connect to the people and places around us. Focusing on emotions: a better understanding of who was affected; better understanding of timescales; how better to support those affected. Non-representational theory: focus on actions rather than spoken word; background moods/atmospheres; being and becoming; bodily performances; emphasis that these are all social: connecting to people and places around us. Affect: about embodied experience before they are registered by conscious thought and become emotions – as emotions socially constructed. Focus on practices rather than representations of everyday life. Consider feelings: tangible but difficult to describe such as the atmosphere in the room. Once written about they become represented. Researching performance and embodiment – performance and identity, the embodied qualities of performance, the relationship between performance and the everyday. Performance and identity – created through performance, not pre-existing of natural categories. Creates possibility of subversion....
