Description

1. The broad statements all three artists are making is about the costs of war and its negative effects. It also shows the loss of life and the damage the war has created. The most significant thing about these three paintings are the differences it portrays. For example the third painting by Otto Dix shows a complete different message than the other two. Dix illustrates the soldiers as evil, by making them wear frightening gas masks, while one soldier is raising a weapon up. The first painting by Paul Nash differs than the second painting by C.R.W Nevinson because the painting by Nevinson is more detailed than the painting by Nash. Unlike Nash’s painting, Nevinson’s painting illustrates the casualties of the war, and how frightening the deaths of the soldiers were. 2. The first painting, by Paul Nash of the Menin Road illustrates the damage the war has created on the land. The trees are damaged, no grass or leaves to be found anywhere. Pollution is hinted at because the clouds seem to be very foggy and dark. The area seems to be isolated, except two men who seem to be searching for signs of life. This helps people understand the message of the painting, which is that the war caused a lot of destruction. The second painting, by Nevinson is more graphic than the first. It illustrates dead bodies, that look rather disturbing, and a lot of destruction. The soldiers who are strong enough, are carrying the injured in the painting. Nevinson’s painting also has the same or similar message as Nash’s except that it is more detailed about the casualties of the soldiers. The third painting by Otto Dix, provides more of an anti war message. Dix illustrates the soldiers as scary men with weapons. So while the other two paintings show a more sad theme and message, Dix’s painting shows more of the evil side of the soldiers, and war.....
