Description

LECTURE: April 4, 2016 Video 1: “The Georges Pompidou Center” She will email us the youtube link Howdy! Here are the links to the videos shown in class today. "The Georges Pompidou Center" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgHjHWbx7pw "Phaeno, Building as Landscape" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZGY_PcSzs4 Thanks, Amber Smoot Graduate Assistant

What feature stood out about Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano’s Pompidou Center Proposal?

Metallic dome rood, high tower, (something I missed) 

What was the inspiration for Archigram’s notion of architecture?

Science fiction offshore pads, oil rigs Building with metals

Briefly describe the structure of the Pompidou Center and purpose of the “gerberette”. Simple and repetitive** They put all functional parts on outside of buildings On west, there are walkways between façade and tie rods Escalator on outside too Two superimposed layers makes it look industrial Huge loading elevators are on the east side, toward the road Green for air, yellow electricity, red for transport, blue for water. “Old spaceship that would never fly; this is not high tech. they are bare necessity” Produces naked space because each level is all empty space. No walls, stairs, just possible fire screens if needed Two football field Only portacabins for offices and bathrooms, nothing else that are movable His challenge was to make something that was dynamic, this shit can easily be changed He made it culturally relative by making it very flexible** Partitions were compromise of no walls and privacy Natural sunlight fucked up MoMA on the top level, so they had to redesign it. A lady made a museum; false lightings hid the steel and shit on the ceiling It looks so much better now Underground, concert halls and buses. Above ground, it’s a huge building set. Steel column left and right, steel column with gibererter, but make it stable by putting tie rob on end of column. It is the fulcrum

6 high, 14 something long Single metal framework always visible, inside and out, to keep the building together. Reinforcements to facades X or V shaped put on ends of Gerberettes All glass facades Some places, glass isn’t there. Le Cor said mass is changing; future would have less mass and more intermingled space

Describe the forecourt and its purpose. As important as building They wanted to use part of the land for “urban” It’s an empty space that makes the center belong to the city Gentle slope to entrance, to make them come in Italian ren. feel Originally, ground level was supposed to open to it, but weather made them close it Until 1995 forum was the center (large art pieces), since then art and everyday city life is there now Introduces to center and makes it a continuation of the city Exhibits life of the city; viewed from west façade which is the meeting point of center and city Escalator is the only nonpaid view in the city

Video 2: “Phaeno, Building as Landscape” 

List the three terms that Zaha Hadid sought to unify through this building.

Form function and constructive structure 

What do the “cones” do for the building? (how do they affect circulation, function, structure, etc.) Concrete columns Vaults support the upper lining and allows lighting Moved away from piloti to an occupy-able structure Each hold necessities for the establishment They facilitate vertical circulation

Describe the interior of the building. Is it open or closed? How are spaces achieved?

Open; no closed off places Slopes, galleries and prospects No starts and stops Everything is gently sloping Only points of reference are the cones Ten needed for floor, five for roof Largest cone has one within it to hold the roof; it is hollow up to roof She brought the building back to ground; and made spatial experience Landscape is the plan; a way of being part of world but creating space

Like craters, canyons, slopes Doubles the exhibition space by using pockets from ground cones; everything is useful One pocket/crater is a conference venue

What is the purpose of the lattice grid frame ceiling? Ensures stability of building Follows relief pattern Roof floats above the experiments...
