Leonsis plans gambling parlor for home arena by Terry Lefton and John Lombardo. Ted Leonsis is the owner of the Washington Wizards basketball team who desires being the first arena with an exemplar sports book with a partner. He desires to explore the fan engagement opportunities related to sports betting. The ideal timeline for this goal is to implement the gambling parlor in his arena by this summer if everything goes to plan. This is all possible due to the D.C. City Counsol’s decision to pass sports gambing in the district. I admire his envision to make his stadium more efficient by having fans come to the stadium more than 41 home games during the season and another 10-15 occasions for events such as concerts. This concept of gambling in the arena will be successful. Sure there are some cons such as fans possibly being violent or more aggressive towards players if they lose a bet due to a players not scoring enough points or getting enough assists. Due to this possibility, some fans may not want to
attend an environment where they don’t feel safe to bring their families and loved ones. But I believe as time goes on, arenas will have to increase security and new ideas may emerge to control gambling and its negative effects. On the other hand, I believe fan engagement will increase because even if the team is not performing at a good level, people may be enticed to come to the arena during the day to gamble and may even stay to watch the games at night and continue their thirsts for excitement by gambling on NBA games. If you spend hundreds of millions or even billions on a stadium, then investors and owners should maximize the use of their stadiums and increase their investments. If this concept of a gamling parlor opens in the Washington Wizards arena this summer, it may start a chain in the NBA. If other owners witness the success of this idea, they may strongly consider implementing a gambling parlor in arenas of their own. This concept could even translate over to other sports such as the MLB or even the NFL if it is highly
successful in increasing fan engagement in the future years to come. With the legalization of gambling laws in seven states in America, sports gambling in arenas will open new doors for owners to make money and create unique experiences for their fans....
