To provide a broad understanding of human languages, the course covers major subfields in linguistics, such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, language acquisition, language variation, and language change. Comprehension Quizzes (5%) These small quizzes will help you retain the content of the required reading. Each file (chapter) is divided into subsections, and some of these subsections are accompanied by Comprehension Quizzes. 2. Discussions (10%) Discussions, which are part of most Modules, are designed to help you engage with the material and with each other. You are asked to post a response to each Discussion topic and also to respond to other students’ posts. For the Collaborative Activity, you will be in assigned groups of five (to be posted). 3. Homework (15%) The Homework at the end of each Module is in quiz-format (multiple-choice and short-answer questions) getting you ready for the Quiz of the Module. The only exception to this is the Homework for the Syntax Module, which is a drop-box assignment. 4. Quizzes (25 %) All Quizzes and Exams consist of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. 5. Exam #1 (10 %): Phonetics & Phonology 6. Exam #2 (10 %): Morphology, Syntax, and Semantics 7. Exam #3 (10 %): Language Acquisition and Language Variation/Contact 8. Final Exam (15 %) The Final Exam is accumulative and based on all the readings, video lectures, and previous exams. 9. All assignments must be completed and turned in on time. 10. All academic work must meet the standards contained in ‘A Culture of Honesty’. Students are responsible for informing themselves about those standards before performing any academic work (see the “Welcome: Start Here” module of the course). Grades: A (100-93), A- (92-90), B+ (89-87), B (86-83), B- (82-80), C+ (79-77), C (76-73), C- (72-70), D (69-60), F (59 or lower) Note: .5 and above rounds up! Minimum Technical Skills (for help, see the “Welcome: Start Here” module of the course) 1. Ability to use the learning management system (eLC) 2. Ability to send email with attachments 3. Basic internet skills 1
