Linguistics Quiz 1 1.) Phonology refers to the system of relationships among the speech sounds that constitute the fundamental components of a language. 

The branch of linguistics that deals with systems of sounds (including or excluding phonetics especially in a language)

2.) Phoneme refers to any of the, distinct sounds in a specified language that distinguishes one word from another; for example, p, b, d, in the English Language go with words such as pad, bad, and dad. 

Phoneme’s in one language are not necessarily the same phonemes in another language.



It is possible to distinguish a phoneme not just by its sound but by its relative length.



Length may also be a characteristic of consonants; such consonants are determined geminates. These do not occur in English, but in other languages they have long and short consonants. Long consonates are indicated in

3.) Phonetics: the smallest units of language which distinguishes meaning. 

This is the study of human sounds that does not focus on saying what function sounds may have in a language. a. Articulatory phonetics (emission of sounds) b. Acoustic Phonetics (transmission of sounds) c. Auditive Phonetics (reception of sounds)

4.) Phone: smallest unit of human sound that is recognizable but not classified. 5.) Recursion: is a property of language. It can also be considered, from a linguistics standpoint, also be called nesting. 
