The Irish Civil War

Listening comprehension and summary Task 1: Watch this 12-minute-long video about the Irish Civil War (https://youtu.be/itU6dp5tlAc) and take notes while watching. If you feel the need to do so, you can reduce the video’s speed by clicking on “configuration” and you can activate subtitles. The subtitles are automatically generated, so they are not 100% correct, but might help if you are struggling to understand the speaker’s Irish accent. IRA – Irish republican army 9. Barracks – a group of long buildings built for military 10. Ambush – a surprise attack 11. Rowdy – noisy and disorderly 12. Bog – wetland with mosses 13. Irish Free State – state established in 1922 14. Loyalists – American colonists who remained loyal to the British Crown during the American revolutionary war 15. Unionists – a political ideology that supported the unity of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

16. Nationalists – an idea and movement that holds that the nation should be congruent with the state. 17. Squads – Irish republican army unit 18. Gaelic football – An Irish team sport, two teams of 15 players on a field 19. Winston Churchill – Prime minister of the UK 20. Black and Tans – an army during the Irish war of independence 21. Dominion – Irish political party 22. Truce – an agreement between enemies to stop fighting for a certain time 23. Partition – divide into parts Task 3: Write a paragraph of approximately one third of a page about the Irish Civil War. I would like you to use your notes from the video as the only sources, to test your listening comprehension skills. Use the vocabulary above actively in your text (not ALL of them, obviously!) and make sure you write in formal English. Hand in those tasks on ITS by the end of class (16:45)

The Irish wanted to break free from British rule way before the civil war began in 1920, however, first world war broke out and Home Rule was put on hold. Some soldiers of Ireland did not participate in the war but stayed behind to plan the Easter Rising. As a result of the Easter Rising, leaders signed the proclamation of independence and took Dublin. Some Englishmen were opposed to this agreement and attacked Dublin. Civilians were killed, yet the protesters were captured, and many were executed. An Irish army was formed, the IRA, they attacked British troops, yet managed to kill only one. As well as this unsuccessful attack, they also tried to assassinate Sir John French, who believed that there could be two ruling parliaments in Ireland, but failed. Winston Churchill put together a team of law enforces, who were vicious and brutal, taking reprisals for IRA attacks out on civilians. Many Irish towns burned to the ground in 1920. After multiple years of conflict and war, England and Ireland agreed on a truce, Ireland became independent, however, the north of Ireland remained a part of the United Kingdom....
