LITERARY ANALYSIS OF ‘I SPY’

1. About the author. Simple facts. a. When lived, maybe when born = Born 2. Okt 1904, died 3. Apr 1991 b. Style of writing = Fast paced narrative, short stories, novels. c. Typical themes = Mystery/thrillers d. Awards = Shakespeare Prize (1968), Edgar Prize: Grand Master Award (1976), Dos Passos Prize (1980), etc.

2. Setting. When, where and scene. a. When, prove it if not specified = During the WW1, zeppelins were stated in the book. b. Where, prove it if not specified = Germany. Zeppelins were stated and took place in WW1 c. Scene, describe. = The scene took place in the father’s tobacconist’s shop. “But the thought of the tobacconist’s shop which his father kept down a dozen wooden stairs drew him on (…) and the little shop lay under a thin haze of stale smoke which would completely disguise his crime.”

3. Plot. Brief and plain summary of what happened, no interpretation. The father was later revealed to be a spy in disguise.

Sneaky & naïve. c. Your assessment of their personalities. It seems to me like it wasn’t Charlie’s first time sneaking into the tobacco shop, but somehow not realizing his father was a spy until now, kind of giving me the naïve sort of vibe.
