The Cask Of Amontillado

In “The Cask Of Amontillado”, Edgar Allan Poe focuses in the theme of revenge and how close friends can ended up in a tragic situation. Also refers to a premeditaded murder, that in simple words can be seen as an act of horror and ruthlessness against Fortunato. Montresor who is a very peculiar person took a decisive decision not in favor of his close friend and the story ends with a terrible murder. He uses first-person viewpoint because emphasizes in the human weekness and adds confusion to the narration. Since it took place in Italy exactly in a carnival where all people is having a good time, the plot becomes darker and with deepth feelings. Montresor chooses the exact moment when Fortunato is drunk, dizzy and fully trust in his friend. At this point the place chenges when he persuade Fortunato to go to the Catacombs and where he is planning to murder him. Some character traits are related with many important aspects of real life, such as the revenge and selfishness that a person can feel for others even knowing they are Friends. Also Fortunato shows friendlissness to his Friends and in a good modo he feels comfortable trusting in him. The story´s setting contributes to the horror and the atmosphere turns into something more unsuspicious so the reader can predict, to fear, and tremble in the opening action. The mystery is in Montresor’s reason for murder. His motive is uncertain other than the vague “thousand injuries that he has suffered at the hands of Fortunato. The Central tension this story relates in how Fortunato had treat in the way he did with Montresor, even when in the story it does not say what were the many injuries that he commited against Montresor. The climax of the narration took place when he is just leaving it locked up in the catacombs. After that he did not feel any guilty about the situations and just continue his life as always. The story is narrated by Montresor and in this case we can just understand his viewpoint and we are not seeing what happen with Fortunato or in which way he thinks. Saying this is really difficult to understand why he killed him if he was a good friend or at least it does not indicate any other terrible stuff. The writter of this selection uses black humour in Montresor´s dialogue with Fortunato, in his indirect insinuation at Fortunato’s upcoming murder, and creates a way of irony around death. This story can’t be described as diabolical. What finally comes out as its real excellence is that the efficient presentation of an easily recognizable, although dark, aspect of attribute....
