Description

Achievements Economic development - Nutrition and food security 5000 children under six years old and 400 pregnant women in poor neighborhoods of Sucre receive daily supplementary milk and food to improve their nutritional status. Between 1996 and 2003, with a focus on sustainable development, 1818 malnourished children were rehabilitated. 54 family centers were founded to provide nutritional education to over 2000 families to improve their nutrition and eating habits. We granted an average of 200 loans per year to families to create small businesses and encourage trade and production. This improved their revenue and their access to food. Economic development - Basic rural sanitation The Yacupaj project, in which IPTK actively participates, was used as a model for the whole country. The success of the installation of over 400 drinking water facilities in the province of Chayanta made the Ministry of Housing and Basic Services (PROSABAR) decide to start training and certificating operators of similar drinking water systems in highlands around La Paz, Oruro and Potosi and in valleys like Cochabamba, Chuquisaca and Tarija.

Economic development - Rural development IPTK integrated several actions in the 4 municipal sections of Chayanta: o We formed productive partnerships. o We improved the process of production, processing and marketing of agricultural products at competitive levels through sustainable use of natural recourses. o We stimulated the productivity of the Municipalities in general. The training of agricultural promoters is an important factor in this work, by doing this we achieved the formation of 10 associations and economic-productive organizations in the province of Chayanta that produce potatoes, beans, fruit and camels. We provide training in production techniques, processing and marketing and how to incorporate into value chains. We also give technical assistance in organizational-, legal-, administrative- and management issues.

Economic development - Livestock improvement - We’ve improved the management and production of sheep and camels by training the farmers in animal health, production and conservation. We also provided technical assistance in management and constructed productive agricultural and livestock stores.

Economic development - INFRASTRUCTURE TO IMPROVE PRODUCTION

We have supported many infrastructure projects to improve productivity, including: -

Roads Irrigation canals Silos Water basins Anti scabicides baths and others

Committees and water judges have been appointed to maintain the irrigation systems and offer technical assistance to ensure the agricultural diversification.

Economic development - Soil management and plant coverage Conservation and improvement of productive space through the interplay of water-soil-plant-animal factors, actions such as: Construction atajados. Construction of small micro-irrigation systems. Soil conservation practices and other

Economic development - Biodiversity and interculturality Recovery of native crop varieties. Organization of local development committees. Promotion of fairs and cultural festivals. Artisan training of women to regain the textile cultural richness of the area. Incorporating intercultural and gender approach in all actions. Economic development

FORESTACIÓN We installed central and community nurseries and started to initiate a development plan for afforestation. This way we want to protect the natural resources and the environment in Chayanta. The shaping of economic and productive organizations is currently in the final phase. The organizations are built on a solid foundation of production and organization that are focused on marketing their products. To strengthen the production system in the province, we are training agricultural promoters that become leaders in their community. We improve the agricultural production and diversification by building infrastructure. Knowledge Development RURAL CENTER OF PROFESSIONALISM (RCOP)

Since 1978, the CENPRUR trains young farmers from across the country, initially providing training in 4 directions in the form of internships: rural, agricultural medicine, appropriate technology, and mining and provincial government. Students had the option to study one, two or three years to obtain the level of promoter, technical assistant or both. Titles are guaranteed by the state in the following areas after a study of 2 years: Nursing Assistants Construction. Farming. Municipal Civil Service.

The education we provide is modular, with a strong emphasis on practice. In recent years, there is an average of 250 students per year, 30 students per level in each direction (2 levels per direction). There is a high demand nationwide for admission to CEPRUR, mainly in the career to become a nursing assistant. A policy that is maintained from the beginning is the merger of Technical Education and Training, which has been included in the curriculum of every education. This merger also contains a series of cultural activities and sports. }

Knowledge Development NATIONAL SCHOOL OF MUNICIPAL ADMINISTRATION (Abbreviation in Spanis ENAM)

ENAM was founded in 1996 to support the social actors who took on new roles and responsibilities from the Popular Participation Law. In the early days ENAM implemented three strategies: municipal management training, technical assistance and management support. ENAM was able to support 18 municipalities of Chuquisaca and Potosi each year. Since 2000, it concentrates its work in the area of training of the leaders and promoting events for analysis and debate on issues such as: hydrocarbons, constituent assembly, and referenda. ENAM, CEPRUR and other training organizations are our response to the need to intensify the political and economic formation beyond technical training.

COMPREHENSIVE COMMUNITY CENTERS (CICOMs) In 1987 the child care centers in Sucre start to respond to the need to take care of young children of migrant families that are forced to leave them alone to go to work in mines and rural areas. In 1992 we established 11 care centers for children in distant neighborhoods each serving an average of 50 children. They provide food, health care, early stimulation and protection. This is a coordinated effort with the parents and family. Since 1998, 350 children are taken care of per year in 8 centers. They have the support of the Municipality through a care program.

ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION (Radio America and Thomas Katarí) Alternative communication is being spread via two channels: Radio America (the voice of the south) and radio Thomas Katarí America Radio in Ocuri. “Prensa Libre”, initially as a weekly, was published by the IPTK since February 1989 for 12 consecutive years. It was characterized as a journal of information, discussion and economic, political and social analysis. It later became a monthly magazine with current issues and analysis on various national and regional topics. 540 issues are now published, with a circulation of 1200 copies per week. “Radio America: Southern Voice” is operative since April 2000. We broadcast on AM and FM in the city of Sucre. The goal is to defend the human rights in the popular sectors and the slums of the city, and to

create critical awareness of the reality in Bolivia. We do this by providing information, discussions, opinions and analysis. Thomas Katarí America Radio, operating since 2007, broadcasts on AM and FM in Northern Potosí. The goal is to defend the human rights of the popular sectors and rural communities. And, like Radio America, to create critical awareness of the reality in Bolivia.
