Description

Our looking glass self is the person that we see based on how others see us. It is based on perceptions and information about you and then how you respond to these assessments. Depending on how we present ourselves, these assessments can be positive or negative. Sometimes there are things about us that we keep hidden, however there are other times when we want to share everything. This can all be affected by the type of relationship we have with someone as well. For example, sometimes I can be in bad mood around my family so they might describe me as grumpy or bad tempered. However, this can all change if I show them a face of happiness and enjoyment. At this time, they would describe me as cheerful and kind. On the other hand, not every relationship in my life is as fluid as with my family. For instance, I rarely get grumpy when I am around my friends so they would usually label me as caring, energetic, and entertaining. When I am with my friends, we always laugh and joke with each other. This affects the amount of bad attitude we have around each other, because we are always able to cheer each other up. Overall, the looking glass self really does impact our self-concept of who we are but it is not always static. Perceptions of ourselves can be altered based on who is describing us and the type of relationship we have with them. Although I am definitely not perfect, I want to have positive views on who I am. Impressions will always impact how we perceive ourselves. If my family actually looked at me 100 percent of the time as grumpy or bad tempered, this might make me change my ways. The labels that I do typically receive from friends and family, however, do tend to be of more positive characteristics. This makes me happy as I want to be someone who is caring and who they can come to if they need anything. I feel the impressions are accurate because I do try to show my true face to those that I have an intimate relationship with. I do not try to hide or fake who I am as I feel that sharing your true feelings or emotions with someone is an important aspect of having a close relationship with someone....
