Description

Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics

LSGI4332A Advanced Photogrammetry

Practical Exercise 1 – Aerotriangulation

Aims Undertake the aerotriangulation of a strip of six photographs using both RO/AO and AT methods. In doing this exercise you should achieve four things: 1.

Understand how a bundle adjustment can be used to perform RO/AO aerotriangulation;

2.

Understand the simultaneous application of AT

3.

Understand the operation of semi-automatic aerotriangulation software simplifies (complicates?) the aerotriangulation process;

4.

See how automatic tie point measurement can go horribly wrong in complex scenes

Materials 1. A strip of 6 aerial photos (in subject folder on LSGI server) 2. Photogrammetric software – Intergraph Photogrammetry (IP) and 3DCT; 5.

User guide for IP.

6.

The camera calibration report.

7.

PDF document showing the 6 aerial photos. The first image has been enhanced while the remainder show what was delivered from the Lands Department.

8.

PDF document showing the control information.

Warning: The images are large in size and will take a while to download from the server. They and the calibration report are also copyrighted material and are not to be used outside of the LSGI laboratories. Failure to observe this requirement may result in something not very nice.

Methodology 1. Form a group of 4 people or less. 2 people are to complete the RO/AO version of AT and two to complete the BA version. As both sets of AT are to be compared you must choose the same tie points for both ATs. 9.

You might want to enhance the photos. Remember that the photographs are large in size and it will take a while to move them from computer to computer.

Report Each group is to submit a zipped file to the Homework\LSGI4332A\Practical_1 folder that contains: 1. Your project files (.blk, .txt. DO NOT SUBMIT ANY IMAGE FILES). 10.

A report of 20 pages maximum (not including figures) that accurately describes: a.

The results of the two approaches to AT using IP.

b.

A comparison of the object space coordinates of the control and tie points (not the ATP solutions).

c. 2.

A discussion of the problems related to Auto Tie Point measurement. A bonus grade will be given to any group that can show the computation of EO parameters of the RO/AO images.

Submit the Honour Declaration to me (in my letterbox opposite the LSGI General Office) before the due time.

Assessment will be according to this grading sheet.

The report must reflect the work of the whole group, not just of one or two individuals. It is expected that all group members are equally familiar with the work done and the content of the report. What you have learned in this practical may be re-assessed in the final exam.

Check the feedback given for your previous photogrammetry reports.

Due 4:30 pm, Friday, 10 October 2015.
