MA1100 Fundamental Concepts of Mathematics 2018/2019 Semester I Lecture Hours: Mon 8.00-9.30am/ Fri 2.00-3.30pm (LT28) Lecturer: A/Prof Tan Victor Email: [email protected]; Office: S17 #07-22; Tel: 6516-7936 Aims and objectives: This module introduces the language, notions, and methods upon which a sound education in mathematics at the university level is built. Students are exposed to the language of mathematical logic, the idea of rigorous mathematical proofs and fundamental mathematical concepts such as sets, relations and functions. Main Topics: Logic (LG) Proof (PF) Mathematical Induction (MI) Sets (ST)
Functions (FN) Relations (RN) Number Theory (NT)
Assessment: Final examination 60% - 26 Nov (1 to 3pm) (close book with 1 helpsheet) Mid-term test 20% - 5 Oct (2 to 3pm) at MPSH (close book with 1 helpsheet) Homework 10% - 4 homework sets to be handed in Class participation 10% - lecture quiz 8% and tutorial participation 2% Homework: There are all together 4 homework sets (HW) The problem sets and marking scheme will be available in IVLE workbin. Hand in the HW by end of Friday lectures on weeks 4, 6, 9 and 11. Late submission will not be accepted without valid reason. Lecture Quiz: There are altogether 18 Lecture Quizzes (LQ) conducted during 18 lectures (see Lesson Plan on page 3). There will be 2 to 3 questions per lecture quiz. Every correct answer is worth 1 mark. Scope of each quiz will be related to that particular lecture. There will be more than 40 quiz questions across the 18 lectures. Students who accumulate 40 marks will get full mark for the LQ. Lecture notes: PowerPoint Slides for each lecture will be available on IVLE Workbin one day before the lecture.

Tutorial class: 4 groups: T01 (Thu 10-11), T02 (Fri 8-9), T03 (Thu 3-4), T04 (Fri 4-5) There are all together 11 tutorial sets (TS). The tutorial problems will be available in IVLE workbin. Weekly meeting with tutors, starting from week 3. Students are expected to work through the tutorial problems before attending tutorial classes. Attendance will be taken. 2 class participation points will be awarded for attendance and presentation. Signing up for tutorial groups: NUS students balloting: Aug 17-22 (through CORS) add/drop: Aug 23 (through CORS) manual: Aug 24 (through lecturer) Non-NUS students: manual registration with lecturer before Aug 17.
