TP-CASTT Poem Analysis of Macavity: The Mystery Cat My initial thoughts about the title all premise around the idea of the word ‘Mystery.’ The conjectures are that Macavity’s appearance, allure, and emotions towards others indicate he might been hiding something. T.S Eliot depicts Macavity as “a ginger cat” that is “very tall and thin.” A deviant criminal who is infamously known to outwit law enforcement. Macavity (frequently referred to as Hidden Paw), is both a cunning and clever “fiend in feline shape” that is never at the scene of a crime. Eliot coins him “with movements like a snake”, forming certain implicit connotations that align with how most people perceive snakes in the works of literature. Specifically speaking, a snake symbolizes characteristics like callousness, emotionless, and insincerity. By making a parallel comparison between the two suggests Macavity might manifest such distinctions. The poet, T.S Eliot, initiates satire throughout the entirety of the poem with his choice of punctuation. For instance, “Macavity’s not there!” could indicate the Scotland Yard and Flying Squad’s capitulate to Macavity, the mysterious rascal that he is. The speaker has a first stanza with an accusatory tone, and a second that later insists these kinds of allegations were intended to be more laudatory when he asserts that, “there never was a Cat of such deceitfulness and suavity.” After rereading the poem, the quote, “he’s a fiend in a feline shape...” solidifies my stance in that Macavity is in disguise as a cat (reiterating back to my initial thought about the title). Macavity: The Mystery Cat is a tale of the title character who commits an array of crimes without the fear of any legal repercussion, inadvertently making a mockery of the lack of disciplinary within the law enforcement.

In Macavity: The Mysterious Cat, Thomas Stearns Eliot takes a satirical aim on the lack of discipline amongst police officers, frequently making a cruel mockery of the criminal justice system. Macavity, a feline criminal mastermind, triumphs in evading the Scotland Yard and Flying Squad with his serpent-like agility and disobeying the laws of nature. Each and every time they reach the scene of a crime, these crime investigators accept their defeat against Macavity, who to them, is a “bafflement” and “despair.” Rather it is looting, rifling through jewel-cases,, or stifling, the duties of any law enforcement are to protect people and property. T.S Eliot foresaw the situation and brought light to the issue at hand by ridiculing and taunting the lack of authority amongst crime investigators throughout this poem. Macavity: The Mystery Cat contains many whimsical and witty forms of literary devices throughout the poem such as repetition, alliteration, and imagery. This agile, cunning, and devilish “monster” will likely be found “a mile away” from the vicinity of the crime and instead, you will “...find him resting, or a-licking of his thumb…” This part of the excerpt truly emphasizes the poet’s central theme, suggesting Macavity was unperturbed and awarded himself a job well-done even with criminal investigators trailing him. Undeniably, Macavity: The Mystery Cat is an ample piece that encapsulates the inscrutable nature of a feline cat in a hilarity for both adults and children alike. With its use of comical imagery, readers can illustrate Macavity as a ginger-coloured pest beyond imagination....
