PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Slows uterine contractions, used if preterm labor begins before 34 weeks gestation,
Therapeutic Use To inhibit premature labor (tocolytic action) also used to prevent maternal seizures in pt with preeclampsia or eclampsia
Complications Can cause maternal flushing, dizziness, headache, possible hypotension. Fetal compliations: Can also cause reduced fetal heart rate, and decreased muscle tone (hypotonia)
Contraindications/Precautions Should not be used in pt that are dilated past 3cm If serum levels are high, could lead to cardiac or respiratory depression
Interactions Do not take in combination with neuromuscular blocking agents
Medication Administration Administered via IV starting with 4-6g, and maintanence dose 1-4g/hr
Nursing Interventions Monitor VS, lung sounds, heart sounds to prevent fluid volume overload and electrolyte imbalance. Check bowel sounds as intestinal smooth muscle will also become relaxed along with uterus
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
Possible vision changes, such as blurred vision, weakness, constipation can occur.
Slowing of the contractions and prevention of preterm labor.
