CHY 121: Spring 2021 Maine Day Challenge CHY 121: Spring 2021 Due Date: Sunday May 2, 2021

Maine Day Challenge Name: ________________________________

Overview Maine Day, celebrated on the last Wednesday of every Spring semester, is traditionally a day of service and Black Bear pride. Students, faculty, and staff all work together to beautify the UMaine campus and perform acts of service for our surrounding communities. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Maine Day cannot be celebrated normally this semester; however, the spirit of Maine Day cannot be extinguished. Now, more than ever, we have an opportunity to embody the spirit of Maine Day in our actions and behavior towards others. Though traditionally a day of service, Maine Day is also an opportunity to express gratitude.

Instructions 

Perform an act of service and/or gratitude for someone in your life or community, take a picture of you completing this task, and fill out the questions below. Responses may be typed or handwritten. These do not have to extravagant acts and should not violate mask mandates or social distancing requirements. For example: o Make dinner for your family/roommates to say thank you for their support during these hard times, organize a family game night with your younger siblings, etc. o Run errands or do chores for an elderly neighbor or family member. o Has a friend or family member been really supportive this semester? Write them a letter to express your thanks and let them know you appreciate their support. o Write a letter of thanks to your postal carrier and leave it on the mailbox so they’ll see it when they deliver the mail. o Pick up trash around campus or your neighborhood. o Say thank you to grocery store employees – my mother is a butcher and regularly tells me stories of being treated poorly by customers during the pandemic. o Are you going through the drive-thru today? Pay it forward – buy the coffee or meal of the car behind you. 

 1

Consider fostering an animal from your local shelter or donating supplies.

Submit this document to the “Extra Credit Opportunities” module on Brightspace to earn 3-bonus points that will be added to your overall course grade at the end of the semester.
