“Marigolds” Plot Chart Exposition: main characters – Miss Lottie, Lizabeth; setting – shantytown, Maryland, 1930s; internal conflict – Lizabeth is between childhood and womanhood, external conflict – The Great Depression and living in poverty Rising Action: Lizabeth, her brother and friends throw rocks and sing the witch song to Miss Lottie. Lizabeth hears her father crying and that upsets her. Climax: Lizabeth pulls up all of Miss Lottie’s marigolds. Falling Action: She regards pulling up the marigolds once she realizes what she did in her fit of rage. Miss Lottie stares at the pulled marigolds with no emotion. Miss Lottie never replants the marigolds. Resolution: The realization that act of pulling up the marigolds was the loss of Lizabeth’s innocence. She later in life understood that the marigolds were the only “good” or bright spot in Miss Lottie’s life....
