Description

Jasmine Peters 1 31 August 2013 Comprehension: 1. According to the text, there was an hour and a half gap between the first stabbing and the time that the police were notified. 2. Within the article a housewife was questioned and she stated that she thought that it was “a lovers quarrel” (129). Along with the housewife a husband and wife said that they were afraid and they did not want to get involved with the murder that was taking place. The couple from the bookstore apartments heard the stabbing take place and turned on their lights but then turned it off so that they could see better but stated that they do not know why they did not call the police. The last man started within the article said that he was too tired to call the police and went back to sleep knowing something was taking place. Purpose and Audience: 1. I believe that the author was trying to tell individuals that people are there they do see things but they are not always willing to come forth with information about what happened. That people should act first when something like a stabbing or murder is taking place because it can save a life. I believe that it holds the same impact on how we view things now. 2. I believe the main idea is that no one is willing to help when someone is in need of it. I believe that he implies it instead of stating it because he wants it to relate to everyone not just within that time era. 3. Gansberg’s purpose in describing the Austin street is to show that although they are middle class, many would believe that things like that would not take place in their neighborhood. That many of what would happen it would take place somewhere else. However, the fact that it is lined with trees shows some seclusion form surrounding streets.

Jasmine Peters 2 31 August 2013 4. I believe the author put the police number in the article because he wanted individuals to be aware of how easy it was to make a phone call to them. That it did not take much dialing and that it would have only taken a second to get the police to where the stabbing was taking place. Style and Structure: 1. Within the article it becomes more interesting knowing how long and where everything is. He is trying to get the readers to understand the significance in the phone call and the witnesses. He also does this to show that it takes many eye witnesses a long time to tell someone about what they saw. 2. The author uses words like good people in quotations to show that he is angry with the people about what has happened. He starts off the article with an angry tone when starting how long it took for the police to be notified and how many witnesses saw the attack. 3. I believe that if paragraphs were combined it would change the meaning of the article. I belief that each paragraph sets a tone and changing the article it would through off its meaning. 4. The dialogue that is stated within the article does strengthen the piece. If there were any more dialogue then the article would become overwhelming with facts and people not helping. However, if there were not any dialogue then it would not interest the audience. 5. It sums up the writers attitude about the action that took place because it tells what time the body was taken by the police and that people started to come out and talk with the police. The last paragraph ties what the author started throughout the piece. The article begins with how long it took for the police to be notified and they state within the article when the attack started and what time the body was brought by the police....
