Sept. 30 2020 The Four Steps of Problem Solving

(must be from the approved list of topics)

Overview:

Objectives:

Materials:

Solving word problems using the four steps of problem solving. We will solve word problems together as a class with visual representations and acting from student volunteers according to the equations represented in our word problem. Each problem will be broken down slowly as we practice using the four steps of problem solving to effectively break down and solve each word problem. Students will place focus on the individual steps of problem solving rather than solely finding the answer to the word problem. -Students can name and briefly describe each of the 4 steps of the problem solving process -Students are then able to efficiently use the 4 steps to effectively solve a given problem -Using the 4 step process students are able to solve problems easier and faster. -Students will need paper and pencil to solve the problems read -Teacher will need worksheet providing word problem examples to read aloud to the class -Whiteboard/markers for teacher and/or student volunteer -Various props and supplies according to the word problem. (For example if a word problem uses fruit) This will help our visual learners, but also demonstrate the problem itself in props and provides a different perspective for problem solving helping us to incorporate the four steps as a class.

Lesson First 30 minutes To start we will discuss the four steps in the problem solving process and why each step is important.(understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back) I will use the whiteboard to talk about and brainstorm with the class out loud why each step could be important. Next we will look at some example problems and instead of looking for the answer alone, we will talk about how to get to that answer using each step in the problem solving process, including looking back once we do find the answer. Using WORD PROBLEM WORKSHEET: Solve problem #1 as a class: “You have 13 birthday gifts. 5 came from your family members, how many gifts did your friends bring you?”

MAT 150 LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Break down this problem using the 4 steps with the class. What is this problem asking us? (understanding the problem) What is the best way to solve this problem? Should we draw a picture or a diagram to help us? (devising a plan) Let’s go ahead and solve it that way together (carrying out the plan) What do we think? Did we do it correctly? Did we solve what the problem was asking? (Looking back) Do #2 and #3 together from WORD PROBLEM WORKSHEET together as a class using this same method. Be sure to engage students in labeling the steps as we work on solving the problems together.

Activity Instructions To engage students and to help our visual learners better understand the four steps of problem solving we will solve #4 together as a class from WORD Problem Worksheet but this time we will need our props (oranges) and 3 Student Volunteers to demonstrate the problem.

Problem #4 There are 3 kids working in the school cafeteria and there are 27 oranges that need to be handed out at lunch time. If the oranges are divided equally among the students, how many oranges does each of the three students helping in the cafeteria get? (Answer is: 27 oranges/3 kids working= 9 oranges each) Student volunteers stand at the front of the class and the oranges will then be divided up equally among the students to get the correct answer. Each step should be talked about in the problem solving process to demonstrate its importance and students should be engaging coming up with the answers for each step and how to proceed best/ Step1: The problem is the we have 27 oranges and they need to be divided up equally. How many will each student get to make it equal? Step 2: We will devise a plan on how to distribute these 27 oranges evenly. Example: One student stands here another there and another there. We will hand out one orange at a time to each student until the oranges are gone. Then we will count how many oranges each student ended up with. Then we will demonstrate step 3 and we will actually carry out the plan the students devise example: dividing out the oranges among the students and counting how many each ended up with. Each student demonstrating will end up with 9 oranges each. Step 4- we will finally look back and check our work to make sure that we distributed 27 oranges evenly among the 3 volunteers by making sure they each have the same amount, meaning the problem has been solved.

MAT 150 LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Assessment Students will quietly work to themselves to complete the “Word Problem Worksheet” Problems 5 through 12 to show that they can quickly and efficiently solve the word problems on their own using the 4 problem solving steps. Students will pick one problem on the assessment to break down and label the 4 steps they used in solving the word problem of their choice.
