Course Description A conceptual approach for students with a serious interest in mathematics. Geometric and physical intuition are emphasized but some attention is also given to the theoretical foundations of calculus. Material covers first a review of trigonometric functions followed by discussion of trigonometric identities. The basic concepts of calculus: limits and continuity, the mean value and inverse function theorem, the integral, the fundamental theorem, elementary transcendental functions, Taylor’s theorem, sequences and series, power series. Prerequisites
The prerequisite for the course is a minimum grade of 70% in both Grade 12 Ad-
vanced Functions (MHF4U) and Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) . Students who do not have this prerequisite are allowed to take the course at their own risk, and are expected to learn certain relevant high school topics independently. There is NO NEED to fill out and/or submit a request for a waiver. Textbook.
Calculus in One Dimension vol I & vol II, by T. Holden. We will use Volume I in the
fall term, and Volume II in the winter term. The bookstore has copies of these books. They are sold independently, and you are encouraged to buy Volume I only, until you are sure you will continue in this course. (I.e. buy Volume I in September, and wait until January to buy Volume II.) There is no

cost difference for buying this way, and it saves you money if you decide not to take this course. Course Website.
You can access the MAT 137 course website through Quercus. Homework
assignments, messages, handouts and other important information will be posted on the website, so you should check it regularly. You will also be able to see your marks for the written homework assignments, quizzes and term tests online. Office Hours.
Please do not be hesitant to come ask us for help. The staff of MAT 137 are
available for extra help outside of class, during our scheduled office hours (see above for dates/times). In addition to these hours, before tests and exams we will hold extra office hours. The times and locations of these hours will be posted on the course webpage. If you cannot make any of the scheduled office hours, please let the instructor know, and hopefully an alternate meeting can be arranged. Tutorials.
Tutorials will begin the week of September 9. All students must be enrolled in a
tutorial section. You should only attend the tutorial you are enrolled in. The main purpose of the tutorial is to give you an opportunity to ask questions and work through examples together with your TA. To get the most from your tutorial, you should review the lecture material and try the assigned problems before your tutorial. Each week there will be a worksheet that your TA will have you work on, either in small groups or independently. Every other week you will write a quiz based on these problems. In addition, these problems will help you understand the material, solve your homework problems, and prepare for tests and exams. Late Drop-down.
There is no longer an option to drop down to MAT 135 after the first MAT
137 term test. The Registrar’s Office and Dean’s Office have decided that this shouldn’t be allowed anymore. The deadline to swtich calculus courses is September 19 (the last day to add or change sections of a course).

Term Tests • There will be 4 (four) term tests. The dates of the tests are as follows: Term Test #1 - October 25, 2019 Term Test #2 - November 22, 2019 Term Test #3 - February 7, 2020 Term Test #4 - March 20, 2020 • Tests will take place during the F 16-18 time slot for all LEC sections!! Please arrange your schedule now, to ensure you are available at the day/times above. Missing a Term Test.
There will be NO make-up tests. If you cannot show up for a test because
of illness or any other special reason, you should declare your absence on ROSI and provide documentation. For medical notes, you MUST use the official UTM Verification of Illness or Injury form, which can be downloaded from the course website. Please keep a copy of the form for your own records. The first time you miss a test, you can simply submit your documentation online (see course page for relevant link). If you miss further tests, you must bring your original documentation to the course coordinator, Jaimal Thind, within one week of the test and submit it online. The marking scheme will be adjusted as follows for students who have missed a test because of illness or any other (approved) legitimate reason. One missed test: The other tests will be worth 12% each and the final exam will be worth 44%. Two missed tests: The other two tests will be worth 15% each, and the final exam will be worth 50%. Three missed tests: The other test will be worth 20%, and the final exam worth 60%. If at some point you anticipate missing all four tests, you should come speak to the coordinator.
Final Exam The final exam of the course will take place during the examination period in April and will be 3 hours long. It will cover all the material from the course. The date, time, and location of the exam will be arranged by the Exam’s Office, and posted once it has been set. Page 3

Homework Assignments There will be 10 written homework assignments throughout the course. These are to be submitted on our course page by 11.59pm on the date they are due. Late assignments are not accepted. Assignments will be posted on the course page.
Tutorial Quiz Each week in TUT your TA will give you some problems to work on, either independently or in small groups. You will be able to ask your TA questions about these problems, and get help working on them in real time. Every two weeks (roughly), there will be a short quiz based on these problems. If you are attending your TUT and taking part in the problem solving during TUT, then this quiz should not be very difficult. There are no make up quizzes. Please see the weekly schedule for quiz dates for your TUT section.
Help If you need help there are many resources available to you. Please come and ask us for help as soon as you need it. Try not to let yourself fall behind. Here are some options for help with mathematics. • All course staff have office hours, which are posted on the course page, and at the top of this document. • You will have opportunities to ask questions in Tutorials. • We have also posted some links in the course page to additional online material (videos, online resources, etc). These can be found in the “Math Help” section of the course page. • You may find working in a small study group can be very helpful. • The Academic Skills Centre also has much to offer. Here is a message from them: At the RGASC, we provide support and a variety of resources to help students develop their math/numeracy and scientific literacy skills. Math Drop-in Sessions - Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC) Location: Manjiwe Nendamowinan (MN), Room 3251 (3rd floor) Math drop-in sessions give students an opportunity to get more general assistance with the skills they need to succeed in their math courses at UTM. These appointments are generally short (15-30 Page 4

Email Policy Before you send an email to course staff, please check if the answer to your question is in the syllabus or on the discussion board. If you’re question is administrative, please email the course coordinator (Jaimal Thind) rather than your instructor. All emails to course staff should come from your “utoronto” email account, and contain “MAT 137” in the subject heading.
