Math 115: Preparation for Calculus Spring 2022 Instructor: Email:

Dr. Hoffmeister [email protected]

Time: Lecture Location:

MWF 11:00 – 11:50 PM 101 Armory

Course Description: The purpose of Math 115 is to help prepare you for the calculus sequence at UIUC. In this course we will explore topics from high school mathematics, but at a more advanced and conceptual level. The goals of the course are to introduce you to precalculus concepts that will refine your underlying logic and reasoning skills, create a familiarity with mathematical notation, and give you opportunities to improve your critical thinking, problem solving, and study skills. Prerequisites: This course is designed for students who have already had coursework in algebra and trigonometry. If you need further exposure in algebra, you may want to consider taking Math 112 (College Algebra) before taking Math 115. All students taking Math 115 must have a minimum ALEKS placement score of 65%. If you do not have this score by the fifth day of class, you will automatically be removed from the course and possibly be placed in Math 112. For more information about the placement exam requirement, you can visit http://www.math.illinois.edu/ALEKS/ or contact a math advisor ([email protected]). Course Pages: 1. Moodle (https://learn.illinois.edu/) This site contains general course information and documents, announcements, homework assignments, grades, etc. Each week a new tab will open in Moodle that will list activities you should complete for that week. Most weeks these tabs will open at 5PM on Sundays. Some weeks we may have additional material that opens later in the week, but we will be sure to communicate that with you. 2. Campuswire (https://campuswire.com) Campuswire will be used as an online discussion forum for course-related questions. You must activate your Campuswire account through the invite sent to your university email. You are strongly encouraged to be active in the online discussions by posting any questions you may have and also by answering questions from your fellow classmates. The instructor and teaching assistants will be monitoring the discussions and will help answer and ask questions, too. Our hope is that the discussions on Campuswire will be an effective way for you to communicate with each other and us. If you need to contact your instructor or TA individually, you may post a private note on Campuswire. Office Hours: See Moodle for a detailed list of office hours. You are welcome to attend any of the office hours, whichever times work best with your schedule. Hours are subject to change, so always check for an announcement in Moodle or Campuswire with the most recent updates. In addition to the Math 115 office hours, you may also attend the Student Support Center (information in Moodle). Course Packet (Required): A course packet is required and is available for purchase at the Illini Union Bookstore. More information about the course packet is given in the first Campuswire post and in the ”Course Preparation” tab in Moodle Recommended Supporting Textbook (This is not required for the course): Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 9th Edition, by James Stewart

Lecture Information: All lectures meet in person from 11:00-11:50 MWF in 101 Armory. Lectures will not be recorded so it is your responsibility to get the notes from a classmate if you need to miss a lecture. Discussion Information: Discussion sections meet in person during your scheduled meeting time on Thursdays. You must attend the section for which you are assigned (see your class schedule for details). You will meet with your TA to work collaboratively with your classmates on worksheets that are designed to help you better understand the concepts presented in lecture. Each discussion meeting is worth 10 points toward your discussion grade and will be calculated as follows: Attendance (5 points): Attendance during discussion meetings is required. You are expected to be on time and stay for the entire class period. Participation and Preparation (5 points): You are expected to come to the discussion meetings ready to discuss the course material with your classmates. Written Homework: Written assignments will be assigned most weeks of the semester and will be posted in the “Homework Assignments” folder in Moodle. The purpose of the assignments is to apply concepts learned in lecture and discussion to new problems. These assignments may include material not necessarily presented in lecture. We expect you may struggle with some of the problems and it may take you some time to complete the assignment. It is your responsibility to understand the concepts on the assignments. You will submit your homework assignments in Gradescope. Submission details are available under the “Homework Assignments” tab. Late submissions will not be accepted. Quizzes: Each week you will have weekly quiz questions pertaining to the content given in lecture. Yuu will take the quizzes in Moodle and they be given each week of the semester that there is not an exam. Each quiz is worth 10 points and is due by 10 PM on Friday evenings. Exams: There are three exams and a comprehensive final exam. You must have prior approval from Dr. Hoffmeister before you can take a conflict exam and only officially excused absences will be considered. There will be a conflict exam form available in Moodle that you can submit to request a conflict exam. Conflicts for the regular exams will be given from 5-6:15PM on the exam dates listed below. The conflict for the final exam will announced once we have assigned time and location. In the event that you need to miss an exam due to an emergency, you must notify Dr. Hoffmeister by e-mail before the exam. Failure to give notification before the exam will result in a score of zero. No accommodations will be made for unexcused absences and it is at the instructor’s discretion whether or not your absence is deemed excused or if there will be a penalty assessed for your absence from the exam. Please refer to the student code for acceptable reasons for requesting a conflict exam: https://studentcode.illinois.edu/article3/part2/3-202/. Please note that all exams will be given in person. Detailed information (including the room location) for exams will be given in lecture, Moodle, and Campuswire. University policies states that failure to take the final exam will result in a failing grade in the course and will be recorded as ABS (absent from the final exam). The final exam is required for the course. Exam Dates: Exam 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Your lowest homework score and quiz grade for the semester will be dropped, as well as your two lowest discussion grades. Your final exam score will replace your lowest exam score. If your final exam score is lower than any of your exam scores, then your exam scores will remain unchanged. Additional Information: • Class Attendance Regular class attendance is essential and expected. If you have to miss a class, it is your responsibility to get the notes and homework assignments from a classmate. Also, please make sure you are following the University’s COVID guidelines, which can be found here: https://covid19.illinois.edu • Calculator Policy Calculators will not be allowed in the course. If you are planning to continue in the calculus sequence at UIUC, it is expected that you can do basic arithmetic, geometry, and trigonometry without the aid of a calculator. The use of a calculator during an exam will be construed as cheating on the exam. • Academic Accommodations To obtain disability-related academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids, students with disabilities must contact the Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES) as soon as possible. Contact [email protected] or visit https://www.disability.illinois.edu/ academic-support/accommodations for more information. If you are entitled to accommodations sanctioned by DRES, submit your official documentation to your instructor within one week of the beginning of the course to ensure your accommodations are being met.

• Class Etiquette The effectiveness of this course is dependent upon the creation of an encouraging and safe classroom environment. Exclusionary, offensive, or harmful speech will not be tolerated and in some cases will be subject to University harassment procedures. We are each responsible for creating a positive and safe environment that allows all students equal respect and comfort. We expect each of you to help establish and maintain an environment where you and your peers can contribute without fear of ridicule or intolerant or offensive language. • Academic Support We believe you are very capable of learning the course material and want to help you gain an understanding of important topics in the course. In order to be successful in the course, we strongly encourage you to be an active participant in your learning. Here are ways you can do that: – Be an active participant during lecture meetings – Complete homework assignments in a timely manner – Contribute during discussion meetings – Study for exams in advance (don’t wait until the night before!) – Be active in Campuswire – Ask questions The course material keeps building throughout the semester, so it is important that you get help along the way if you don’t understand a concept. I look forward to working with each of you. I am passionate about teaching mathematics and hope we can work together to help you better understand concepts in Precalculus. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions throughout the semester. ∼ Dr.H offmeister
