Course Description This course is designed and prepare students for planning on taking Precalculus and then Calculus. Topics that you are going to learn include linear, polynomial, rational, and radical expressions as mathematical models; solving equations and systems of equations that arise through the application of these models. Prerequisite: Knowledge of elementary algebra.

Course Materials Textbook (Not Required): Elementary Courses Committee Textbook: Intermediate Algebra by Aufmann & Lockwood, 9th Edition

Online Homework Platform: WebWork You would need to go to webwork.qc.cuny.edu and login using your Queens College CAMS account information. You will complete all your homework assignments and might take your assessments as well on this WebWork platform. If you don’t know your CAMS account information, please contact the Queens College Helpdesk immediately and get it set up. Virtual classroom will take place in Zoom. A graphing calculator is not mandated for this course, but you can use it anytime during the semester.

Course Objectives By the end of the course, students should be able to:           

Demonstrate their knowledge and application of linear functions Solve systems of linear equations Apply the properties of exponents to simplify algebraic expressions Factoring polynomials Simplify rational expressions Demonstrate their knowledge of rational exponents and radial expressions Solve rational equations Solve quadratic equations. Identify properties of quadratic functions Solve radical equations Identify the equation of a circle

Grading Policy In order to receive a passing grade in the math class, you must earn an overall class average of at least 73, which is a C. The chart below summarizes how your overall class average will be determined. Percent of overall class average

Class Expectations and Rules: 1. Attendance - You are expected to attend classes in their entirety. Every class builds on the previous class, so even if you miss only one day, you miss a lot. We expect you to attend at least 90% of your classes. If you are absent or late to class, it is your responsibility to get any missing assignments and notes, as well as to make up the work. 2. Homework - You will be assigned homework from WebWork every Mondays and Wednesdays after your class. You are expected to complete all homework assignments on time and to the best of your abilities. 3. Participation - You are expected to participate actively in class discussions, work independently, and explain and present your ideas, work, and answers by:  

Speaking-Out – Click the “Raise hand” button, unmute your mic and explain or present your ideas with classmates and instructor. Typing in Chat – You could type your answers or ideas in chatroom.

4. You must act respectfully to all students and staff. We will work together to build a student-centered and a cooperative learning community for all.

5. Communication - Please do not hesitate to reach out to the instructor by emails if you have any questions or concerns. Your questions and concerns will be taken care of during the week from 9am – 5pm. If your messages or emails are sent during the weekend or anytime after 5pm during the week, they might not be answered shortly unless it is urgent.
