CLASS DAY/TIME: W 1p-4:50p R 830a-450p CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Simulated patient care provides an opportunity to develop the psychomotor skills necessary to provide nursing care to meet basic patient needs. Emphasis is placed on the use of standard precautions, provision of a safe care environment, and maintenance of patient privacy and basic principles of documentation. Through the use of additional simulated patient care activities and mastery of basic care principles, students are provided the opportunity to develop progressively complex nursing skills to include sterile technique, airway maintenance, nutritional and fluid support, elimination devices, specimen collection, medication Ivy Tech Community College Academic Affairs

administration, drug dosage calculations, and more advanced principles of nursing documentation. MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to: 1.

Demonstrate nursing skills utilized in meeting basic needs of patients through the effective use of technology and standardized practices that support safety and quality and reduce risk of harm to self or others. (SLO 1, 2, 3) Demonstrate competencies in techniques necessary to maintain a safe patient care environment to minimize risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance. (SLO 1, 2) Demonstrate awareness of the need to protect patient privacy, explore ethical and legal implications of patient-centered care, facilitate informed patient consent for care, and appreciate shared decision-making with patients and families. (SLO 1, 5, 6) Demonstrate knowledge of basic scientific methods, utilization of infection control principles and standard precaution measures, and integration of evidence-based practices when performing psychomotor skills and processes integral to clinical practice. (SLO 3) Safely demonstrate progressively complex nursing skills, substantiated with evidence, that integrate nursing science in the provision of safe, quality care and promote the health of patients. If you are currently enrolled in the nursing program and have successfully completed NRSG 100 Fundamentals of Nursing and NRSG 115 Nursing Lab with a “C”, you may be eligible for the CNA evaluation. Students currently enrolled in the nursing program and have successfully completed NRSG 106 Pharmacology for Nursing with a “C” or higher may eligible to take the QMA final examination. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Regional Attendance Policy: Student attendance is reported to the Registrar for auditing purposes. “Federal financial aid recipients who withdraw or stop attending all classes before the 60 percent point in the term will owe money back to the federal government and/or Ivy Tech” from http://www.ivytech.edu/financial-aid/SAP/ Classroom Attendance Statement: Students are expected to attend all lab sessions. METHODS OF EVALUATION: 1. Demonstration: Skills will be evaluated on the following principles: accuracy, efficiency, safety, asepsis, and organization. The student must demonstrate proficiently each skill in the time allotted. Skills not performed at the assigned evaluation time will be scored as an unsuccessful attempt. Skills will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. There will be three attempts allowed to pass a skill demonstration. Point deductions will be taken for second and third attempt. attempt must be completed prior to a student’s third and final attempt. Failure to pass any one of the skills listed below by the third attempt will result in course failure. Additional Skills Demonstration for Credit Only: Additional skills will be practiced and demonstrated during lab hours. Verification of practice and skill demonstration will be witnessed by peers or faculty members for credit only. Failure to practice these skills and have their demonstration witnessed for accuracy and completion will result in a grade of “Incomplete” for this course until such time they are completed. A list of these skills will be provided by the course facilitator.

2. Assignments:  All Homework is due at the beginning of class or when the instructor specifies. A deduction of 10% per day will be subtracted from the score for each day it is late up to 50%. 3. Docucare Skills Documentation  There are SIX Skills that you will need to document in Docucare. You are expected to document these skills IMMEDIATELY AFTER you perform your check-off. This is the expectation for documentation in the world of nursing, so it will also be the expectation here. The Docucare Assignments will close at 6 pm the day the check-offs are scheduled. If you did not document your care, then it was not done and you will receive a score of ZERO for the documentation portion of the check-off. 4. Quizzes:  A quiz will be given every Thursday at the beginning of class for weeks 1-7 and will cover any material that is assigned for that week. Points for quizzes will vary depending on the amount of material that has been assigned. Quiz answers will not be reviewed until every student has taken the quiz. If you are not present during the scheduled quiz time, you will be deducted 10% per day until the quiz is taken. Extenuating circumstances may be reviewed at the discretion of the instructor. 4. Grading scale: o 92 - 100 A o 83 – 91.99 B o 75 – 82.99 C o 70 – 74.99 D o 0 – 69.99 F  Overall grading will be calculated as follows o 80% skills check-offs o 20% quizzes and assignments  Documentation is considered part of the skills check-off and will be included in the 80%  To successfully pass this course, an average of 75% must be achieved at the end of the Course LAST DATE TO DROP COURSE WITHOUT A GRADE: Saturday, September 29th, 2018  Ivy Tech Faculty perform administrative drops for students who do not attend class early in the semester by submitting a no-show withdrawal (NW) during the 100 percent refund period of a course (two weeks for the 16-week session; one week for eight week session). This applies to all class formats. Attendance Drop Deadline: August 24th , 2018. MAKE-UP POLICY: It is very difficult to make up missed practice time for lab. It is important that you are present to practice the skills on your scheduled lab day. There may be some open lab hours (based on room availability) that students may come in and practice skills on their own. If you are required to repeat a check-off because of a failed 1st or 2nd attempt, then you are responsible for scheduling a time with the instructor in order to practice, remediate, and checkoff. RIGHT OF REVISION: This syllabus is provided as a learning guide for students. It serves the purpose of letting students know what is expected of them during and by the completion of this course.
