REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________

Description of Skill Medical Asepsis: The use of precise practices to reduce the number, growth, and spread of microorganisms ("clean technique") (e.g. administering oral medication, managing nasogastric tubes, providing personal hygiene) Surgical Asepsis: The use of precise practices to eliminate all microorganisms from an object or area and prevent contamination ("sterile technique") (e.g. parenteral medication administration, insertion of urinary catheters, surgical procedures, sterile dressing changes)

Indications Check for latex allergies Hand hygiene Covering mouth when coughing or sneezing Using or disposing facial tissues Wash hair frequently and keep short or pulled back Keep natural nails short and clean Wear protective clothing if directed

Outcomes/Evaluation Patient will show no signs and symptoms of infection as evidenced by VS within normal limits and absence of signs and symptoms of infection. Maintain medical and/or surgical asepsis for procedure (e.g. providing personal hygiene, sterile dressing change) Early recognition of infection to allow prompt treatment.

Potential Complications

CONSIDERATIONS

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Pre: Maintain a sterile field, only sterile items in the sterile field. Outer wrapping and 1 inch border around the edges are not sterile. Any object below waist or above chest is considered contaminated. Intra: Perform hand hygiene. Set up sterile field. Open top flap away from the body. Pour sterile solutions. Place bottle cap face up clean on a non-sterile surface. Don sterile gloves. Post: Remove gloves, take them off by grasping outer part of glove at the cuff area, avoid touching the wrist and pull glove over fingers and into hand that is still gloved. Then, placed ungloved hand inside the soiled glove and pull glove inside out until only clean inside part is exposed. Discard into an appropriate receptacle.

Client Education Proper hand hygiene Emphasize importance of covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, using or disposing of facial tissues. Ensure spatial separation of 3 ft from those with a cough or wear a mask

Nursing Interventions

Contamination

Perform hand hygiene after contact with anything in the client's rooms and after touching contaminated items.

Infection

Remove jewelry from hands and wrisys to facilitate hand disinfection. Before beginning any task or procedure that requires aseptic tecnique, health care team members must check for latex allergies. Use masks, gloves, gowns, and protective eyewear to help control the contact and spread of microorganisms to staff and clients
