God was believed to be root cause of all the diseases. o If some was sinful, then an illness was believed to be caused by God.  For instance the epidemic of the Plague.  To remind the duties of the Church Belief of the Doctrine of Signatures. o God had created illness, but in his kindness he had also created the right herbs or plants to treat the illness. Some people began to notice the link between disease and bad air and bad smell o Mortality rates were extremely high as many people lived closer together alongside animals. Most people believed illness and early death were inevitable. o Child mortality was around the age of 7 and childbirth was a dangerous time for women. Warfare and famine were frequent. Some believed that the illness was caused due to magic and the supernatural world. o Witchcraft was feared and many believed the world was full of demons, trying to cause death. o Church painting of good fighting the evil Widest belief of illness was when the four humours were out of balance. Every doctor agreed with Hippocrates and Galen that illness was caused by the loss of equilibrium Was treated with a chart and a zodiac chart to pick the best time to plan an operation or pick up herbs.
