En 12 Jc/Ri – Method sheet – Writing a review

When writing a review, you provide information on a book, play or film you have read or watched, as well as expressing your opinion about it. Reviews are meant to either recommend the work in question or to discourage people from reading or seeing it.

Preparing the review  Read the book/play or watch the film/play you want to write about, making notes of interesting, very good or very bad aspects. It may be useful to consider typical elements of the text type/film type in question.  Take more notes on the important information about the book/film (the author/the director, the title, the year of publication (, the running time)), your rating (x stars out of five/ten); takes notes for the introduction of your review (basic information; the genre; the characters/the cast); notes for the main part (short summary; attention: do not give away the ending; a character web, themes, techniques used for example flashbacks), key words for your comment (your opinion (pros and cons) e.g. on the plot, the characters/the actors, the message (film: dialogues, special effects)), notes for your conclusion (summary of your opinion, recommendation, target group)  Structure your ideas (either in a grid or a mind map).
