Management: Not-for-profit sector Lecture five: Volunteers and volunteerism Volunteering in rest homes: Stakeholder interest ● Staff: Relieves stress ● Volunteers: Gaining more skills, they were all woman/immigrants ● Older people: They feel as if there is something they have to offer society UN Criteria Volunteerism: ● It is not undertaken for financial gain (but expenses can be reimbursed); ● It is undertaken of one’s own free will (but acknowledged that people are ● sometimes pressured, not being voluntold) ● It brings benefits to a third party as well as to the people who volunteer (and can include neighbours, friends, environment, the arts, etc.) 3 Types of volunteers: Shin and Kleiner (2003, cited in Worth, 2012) ● Spot – casual and episodic, no skill, required ● Regular – committed, sense of gratification and accomplishment, formality, job descriptions, etc.; ● Pressured to volunteer – by employer, peers, educational requirement Motivation: ● There is no leverage as a manager over volunteers as there is with paid staff. Therefore, management strategies need to be different.
