Instructions for Case Executive Summary (due April 13th) In support of the Univerity Magis Core Curriculum, this written assignment provides an opportunity for students to receive intensive, focused instruction on the preparation of an executive summary. The summary of large amounts of information is a critical managerial skill. This assignment is intended to allow students to explore and practice this process. In addition to inclass instruction about how to craft a written executive summary, we will address this assignment in multiple steps to deepen your understanding. Specifically, you will: (1) prepare a preliminary draft of the executive summary; (2) receive feedback on your work; (3) upon receipt of feedback, review your work critically and reflect on opportunities to enhance your executive summary; and (4) employ creative thinking and problem solving to revise and edit the executive summary before resubmitting your final draft. I also will ask you to prepare a double-spaced, one-page Word document in which you reflect on the writing and revision process. The executive summary should summarize the primary analysis of the case. The primary analysis includes three sections: a.

Fundamental management problem – As you read the case, diagnose the fundamental management problem facing the protagonist. The problem should focus on one primary issue, but may have many different symptoms. For example, if you determine that the employees in the case are dissatisfied, this may be a symptom, rather than the fundamental problem. Dig deeper to diagnose what is causing the dissatisfaction. As you present the fundamental management problem in your summary, you will need to convince the company that this problem exists. Therefore, support your diagnosis with as much evidence from the case as you can. You should also include relevant theories and concepts from MGT 301 that help support your problem diagnosis.

b.

Recommended solution – Using theories and concepts we have covered in this class, generate a solution to resolve the fundamental management problem. It is important that your solution is a viable alternative for addressing the problem you diagnosed. You also will need to describe why you decided this was an approptiate solution.

c.

Action plan – Generate an action plan that summarizes an approach for implementing your solution. Include information about the steps that should be taken, the time frame for each step, the responsible parties for each step, and the criteria for evaluating the success of the plan.

A grading rubric for the executive summary, which is due April 13th, is provided on the following page.

Instructions for Case Executive Summary Reflection (due May 4th) As part of the Case Executive Summary project, you will also be asked to take time to reflect on the writing and revision process. The purpose is to have you explicitly reflect on and assess your learning experience from initial draft, to receipt of feedback, through preparation of the second draft. Please submit a double-spaced, one-page Word document in which you address the following questions: (1) How has your understanding of the format for an executive summary changed (if at all) after having completed the Case Executive Summary assignment? (2) What feedback, if any, pertaining to your initial draft caught you by surprise? (3) Describe three specific actions that you took to integrate faculty feedback into your final executive summary. (4) How challenging was it to incorporate the feedback from the initial draft into your second draft? (5) After completing this assignment, what did you learn about the writing process that you will be able to make use of in the future? May 4, 2021 is the deadline for this part of the assignment.
